Grabbed bananas and spinach on Monday night. Two women were arguing in the produce section about Helen of Troy.

Helen. Not the upcoming movie.

Whether Helen should be Black. Whether it even mattered.

Once people in my grocery store start arguing about Bronze Age Greece beside the avocados, the story has broken containment.

Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey trailer had already crossed 28 million views by then. YouTube jammed with angry thumbnails and red circles around Lupita Nyong’o’s face. One tweet about the controversy pulled 4.6 million views in a single day.

Culture Explorer, one of the sharpest history writers on X, said it well:

“Modern Hollywood treats inheritance like raw material for contemporary moral messaging. Then people who object get mocked for caring about the inheritance itself.”

He’s right. But Aristotle wrote something about skin color that neither side is reckoning with, and it complicates both arguments.

Hollywood earned some of the backlash.

Studios spent almost a decade making the same casting move in the same direction. The brain needs about three repetitions to recognize a pattern. After fifteen, it stops feeling like artistic freedom. It feels like policy.

Being told you’re imagining it is what turned annoyance into anger.

At the same time, Helen of Troy turns out to be a strange hill to die on.

Because Helen wasn’t real.

Helen Wasn’t Real. Her World Was.

Homer calls her “white-armed.” Sappho describes her hair as xanthe, that pale golden shade the Greeks associated with beauty and status. In Bronze Age Greece, pale skin mattered because it meant a woman lived indoors, away from fields and heat. Soft hands and covered skin meant a life without sunburn and work.

But Homer constantly gives the same description to Hera and other noble women. These were oral-poetry formulas, repeated by memory across generations, moving from singer to singer long before they touched parchment.

They weren’t eyewitness descriptions.

The archaeology from Helen’s world is more concrete than the poetry. A 2017 Nature study looked at DNA from Minoan and Mycenaean remains tied to Bronze Age Greece and Anatolia, the world the Trojan War stories came from. Most ancestry traced back to Anatolian farmers, with additional ancestry from the Caucasus and Iran. Dark hair and olive skin probably dominated.

The bones and the poems point roughly in the same direction.

Helen wasn’t real, but the world that invented her was.

Memnon Got Immortality. He Still Wasn’t Greek.

The Greeks knew Black Africans well. Attic vase painters documented them in black-figure and red-figure pottery from roughly 550 to 400 BCE — African boxers at Greek games, soldiers in battle, faces on drinking vessels. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has several.

Herodotus describes Ethiopian soldiers fighting in Xerxes’ Persian army during the invasion of Greece in 480 BCE, the same campaign as Thermopylae. Greeks fought beside and against them at Plataea.

Memnon, king of Ethiopia, arrives at Troy after Hector dies. He nearly matches Achilles in battle before finally falling. Hesiod calls him king of the black Ethiopians. Later stories say the gods granted him immortality.

The Greeks could admire outsiders without pretending they were the same people.

Memnon’s whole role depends on where he comes from.

The Trojans and Greeks share one world. Memnon rides in from another. That geography is built directly into the story. Helen is Spartan, at the center of the Greek world. Memnon appears at its edge, arriving from somewhere the Greeks considered the edge of the known world.

His Africanness is the entire point of the character.

Aristotle wrote something that almost never appears in this debate. Very dark people were supposedly cowardly. Very pale people were cowardly too. Women and northern Europeans got grouped together there. Courage sat somewhere in the middle.

Conveniently Greek.

The Greeks didn’t ignore skin color. They ranked it, built a philosophy around it, and placed themselves at the ideal.

Greeks noticed difference constantly. They just organized it around different things than we do.

Civilizations Don’t Preserve Stories Casually

Some people say it’s myth. Relax.

Civilizations don’t spend three thousand years preserving stories they feel relaxed about.

Virgil built the Aeneid directly on Homer. Dante placed Homer among the great poets in the Inferno.

Then Joyce turned Ulysses into a line-by-line response to the Odyssey while sitting in Zurich cafes, pages stacked beside cold coffee cups. Cigarette smoke drifted toward the ceiling

Some medieval monk spent bitter winter nights copying Homer onto stretched animal skin by candlelight while snow piled against stone walls outside. He preserved it for people he could never imagine.

Eight hundred years later, somebody would scream about casting decisions through a cracked iPhone screen while DoorDash headlights rolled up outside.

The chain somehow never broke.

The Greeks didn’t treat these stories like disposable entertainment. They treated them as ancestral memory, woven into their understanding of where they came from. Changing details carried meaning.

Culture Explorer got this right. Once you start mocking people for caring about the inheritance, you’ve already decided the inheritance doesn’t matter much.

If the ancient poem is only raw material for a modern blockbuster, why call it The Odyssey at all?

The Street Runs One Way

Since around 2017, the same casting pattern has repeated often enough that audiences started noticing the direction of traffic.

Bridgerton turned Queen Charlotte into a Black queen built around disputed theories of distant ancestry. Netflix cast a Black actress as Cleopatra, triggering backlash from Egypt itself because the Ptolemaic dynasty remained aggressively Macedonian-Greek for three centuries. Troy: Fall of a City cast Black actors as Achilles and Zeus, drew poor ratings, and got canceled. Jodie Turner-Smith played Anne Boleyn despite five centuries of surviving portraits showing exactly what Anne looked like.

Nobody is remaking Shaka Zulu as Scandinavian.

The street runs one way. It’s okay to notice.

A 2023 Ipsos survey found that half of Americans felt diverse characters were being added mainly to satisfy representation goals rather than help the story. White respondents agreed most strongly. Hispanic respondents came in just under 50%.

That’s not a fringe opinion. That’s half the United States.

The Angrier the Internet Got, the Greener the Spreadsheet Looked

Hollywood noticed all this before most audiences did.

Somewhere in Los Angeles, executives watched engagement numbers climb across wall-mounted screens while catered sushi dried out beside untouched bottles of Perrier.

The internet thought it was fighting over history. Hollywood thought it was opening weekend.

From roughly 2017 through 2023, diversity messaging looked profitable. Prestige media rewarded it. Investors rewarded it. Then the political winds shifted, and the math shifted with them.

By 2025, white actors held more than three-quarters of all major roles in theatrical films. Two years to reverse a decade of stated commitment.

Hollywood’s convictions last exactly as long as the profit margin does.

Every outrage cycle became free advertising with studio lighting and better analytics.

Everyone yelling online is still buying tickets. The studios know it.

Both sides are doing unpaid work for Hollywood.

The Story Outlived the Argument

People are reacting to something older and harder to name than casting decisions.

Three thousand years ago, somebody told a story about a woman whose face launched a thousand ships. It survived collapsing kingdoms and burned libraries. It crossed from oral poetry onto parchment, then into printed books and glowing phone screens in dark bedrooms at two in the morning.

Now it feeds an internet war in 2026.

The people fighting over Helen’s complexion shout past each other because they’re using different maps. One side imagines the ancient world as basically colorblind and infinitely interchangeable. The other treats these stories like sealed ethnic property that modern people aren’t allowed to touch.

Neither map would make sense to an actual Greek

The Greeks themselves told us how they thought about this. They placed themselves at the center of a human spectrum they invented and arranged everyone else around them in order of distance from the ideal.

I don’t know what those two women in the grocery store concluded. The argument was still going when I left.

Probably settled nothing.

The press releases will be gone by next month. The think pieces will follow shortly after.

Helen will still be standing there, same as she always has been, waiting for the next person to argue about her.

Molten pizza cheese runs 150–180°F straight out of the oven. Mozzarella holds heat as no other cheese — the oils and moisture stay locked together, preventing heat from transferring even after you pull the slice away.

That quarter-sized loose flap of skin hanging from the roof of my mouth afterward? Pizza palate, dentists call it. A classic pan pizza injury.

I ate it piping hot, anyway.

The smell hit me before the food did. Warm dough. Whole-milk mozzarella browning at the edges, richer than what most places use. I walked through the door, and the place was already working its way into my mind.

Red cups. Pac-Man machines. The salad bar Tiffany lamps throw amber light onto checkered tablecloths. Booths that squeaked when I slid in with my family on a packed Friday night.

Most of those old-school restaurants are gone now. Pizza Hut turned itself into a bland box with a delivery window sometime in the 1990s and never looked back.

You’d never know what you were supposed to feel walking through the door of a Pizza Hut that looked like a bank or car dealership.

But there’s one in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania — population 6,000, up in the green hills — that never changed. People drive from New York, Philadelphia, and Florida, hours out of their way, to eat pan pizza under Tiffany lamps in a red vinyl booth. The location does $10,000 on a good night. Families drive up from cities to show their kids what a Pizza Hut used to be.

Turns out someone ran the numbers on that. A company called Daland Corporation, based in Wichita, now operates 94 of these locations across 11 states. They plan to convert at least 80 of them to the Pizza Hut you remember from the 1970s and 1980s.

Nobody in 1987 thought Pizza Hut architecture would someday become nostalgic.

Then the chains flattened everything into gray boxes and delivery windows.

The red roof survived long enough to become a memory people drive hours to visit.

But the instinct it was selling goes back much further.

Pompeii Had Fast Food, Too

Pompeii was buried under volcanic ash in 79 AD when Mt. Vesuvius erupted.

Archaeologists have found around eighty hot-food counters built directly into the streets of Pompeii. They were called thermopolia. Stone counters with ceramic jars sunk into them, some still containing traces of duck, pig, fish, lentils, and wine. Frescoes above the counter advertised what was available.

Some had seating.

Most Romans living in apartment buildings had no kitchens. So they ate out constantly. A warm room. A counter. Other people nearby. Plates knocking together. Steam lifting from the jars.

The resemblance to a fast-food restaurant is unsettling. We see the same layout and logic. The same desire for food and gathering of friends and family.

The Pizza Hut revival reaches back further than people think. Warm food. Noise. Families and strangers sit close together while dishes clatter in the background.

We wrapped that ancient feeling in red vinyl and Tiffany lamps for a few decades.

$100 Per Store. Thousands of Stores. One Smart Architect.

The red roof was engineered to get attention.

Richard D. Burke designed it around 1969, a college friend of the Carney brothers as Pizza Hut franchising exploded across America. His deal was simple: $100 per store instead of a lump sum. Thousands of locations later, he became wealthy from a roof most people assumed was temporary.

He never designed another building as famous.

Burke understood something modern chains forgot. A driver moving 45 miles an hour has only a few seconds to decide whether to stop. The roof made the decision before the sign came into focus. You saw the silhouette and already knew the room waiting inside.

The building was making a promise. Tapping into something ancient inside of us.

Then the chains flattened everything into neutral-colored boxes and delivery windows. Buildings designed to move food instead of holding people.

The Tunkhannock Pizza Hut kept the old promise alive.

People drive hours to collect it.

Nostalgia.

In 1688, Nostalgia Could Kill You

Nostalgia used to be a diagnosis.

A Swiss physician named Johannes Hofer coined the word in 1688. Nostos meant homecoming. Algos meant pain. He was writing about Swiss mercenary soldiers fighting far from home who developed physical symptoms: irregular heartbeat, loss of appetite, and fever. Some doctors believed nostalgia could kill.

Commanders sometimes banned traditional folk songs because certain melodies seemed to trigger outbreaks. Music was a biological hazard.

Over centuries, the diagnosis softened into something bittersweet. The pull stayed the same.

Smell is where it hits hardest. The signal reaches the older parts of the brain tied to memory and emotion before conscious thought catches up. Childhood memories leave deep marks there because those systems are still wiring themselves together when you’re young.

Which is why walking into that Pizza Hut felt strange almost immediately.

Before you registered the lamps or the booths or the cast-iron pan on the table, your brain had already gone backward.

Marcel Proust described the same thing in 1913. The smell of a madeleine dipped in tea sent him so completely into childhood that the past stopped feeling distant.

The smell didn’t remind him. It transported him.

That’s what the warm dough and sizzling cheese were doing.

You thought you missed Pizza Hut.

What you actually missed was the room.

The noise. The smell. Red everywhere. The booth squeaking when you slid in with your family and friends. Your brain had stored all of it somewhere and was waiting for the door to open again.

The red roof was the key.

People stopped scrolling. Some admired her beauty, while others expressed concern and unease.

That argument has been running for 100 years. Almost nobody knows how it started.

The Beauty Standard Didn’t Slowly Evolve

In 1901, the ideal body had full hips, rounded shoulders, and skin that suggested leisure. By 1925, one researcher tracking Vogue found bust-to-waist ratios had dropped roughly 60 percent. Sixty percent in twenty-five years.

The flapper silhouette arrived with a flat chest, narrow hips, and a boyish frame. In 1918, Lulu Hunt Peters published Diet and Health: With Key to the Calories.

Millions of copies sold. Calorie counting became a moral act involving discipline and self-control.

Something was now encoded in thinness that hadn’t been there before. The question is where it came from.

The Origin Story Nobody Wanted to Write Down

Sabrina Strings spent years asking a simple question: where did the thin ideal actually come from? Not fashion or health. She followed it back into the 18th and 19th centuries, where European and American writers linked fuller bodies to blackness, “savagery,” and a lack of restraint.

Thinness became coded as disciplined, white, refined, and controlled. The moral freight attached to a thin body was constructed and built, in part, on racial anxiety.

What the Greeks Spent Hundreds of Hours Carving Into Stone

She was carved around 150 BCE — Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Rounded shoulders. A stomach that folds slightly at the waist. Hips with weight behind them. The body looks warm and fed.

No sculptor in those workshops was chiseling toward visible ribs.

The ancient Mediterranean lived on the razor’s edge of hunger. Harvests failed. Winters stretched on. Grain ships sank. A body with softness meant something very different than it does now. It suggested health, fertility, and enough food in the house to survive another season.

Thinness belonged to laborers, the sick, and the poor.

A beautiful woman never looked hungry.

“The girl herself was not too thin.” — Catullus

A Roman poet born in 84 BC wrote that down because it needed saying. Which means someone thought thin was worth aspiring to even then — and he was pushing back.

Ovid wrote about women with softness on their bodies. Wide hips, full thighs, skin that suggested leisure. The Roman word gracilis didn’t mean skeletal. It meant balanced. Proportional.

But the reason those ideals existed at all was economic. A hard winter could still empty granaries in 100 AD. Grain ships from Egypt disappeared in storms. Bread prices spiked fast enough to start riots. Against that backdrop, a well-fed body carried social meaning, much as a Rolex does now.

Roman banquets piled tables with bread still warm from ovens, olives glistening in oil, roasted fish, and honey cakes. Wealth had calories attached to it. People could see it sitting at the table.

That alters what beauty becomes.

Botticelli and Rubens Were Painting the Same Ideal

The painting wasn’t hanging in a museum — it was commissioned for a Medici villa, made for one of the wealthiest families in Europe to hang in a private room. The people who saw Venus every day were the people who set the standard.

Look closely at her.

Her stomach softens at the waist. Her hips widen naturally. She looks nourished and rested. Scholars and artists were pulling ancient manuscripts from storage across Florence, translating them, arguing about them in candlelit rooms. The body Botticelli painted was a deliberate return to what the ancients believed beauty looked like.

His women hung in the courts of kings. Philip IV of Spain collected them. The Habsburgs collected them. The most powerful men in Europe looked at round buttocks, plump thighs, curved bellies — rolls and dimples, skin catching the light differently in every fold — and called it beauty.

The word Rubenesque exists because language needed a name for his idea of beauty.

When the Signal Flipped

For most of history, eating well signaled wealth because food was uncertain. Once abundance became ordinary, the signal reversed.

A visible rib cage sends one message in a world of supermarkets and social media. It sent a completely different one in a world where famine was a living memory passed from parents to children.

The ideal kept thinning through the 20th century. Twiggy in the 1960s, heroin chic in the 1990s. Ozempic culture now. Actual American women got larger on average over the same period. The gap between real bodies and the approved body widened decade after decade.

That may be why the Demi Moore photos pulled 41.7 million views. The thin ideal looked almost too successful. Pushed to the extreme now. Thin enough that people couldn’t decide whether they were looking at beauty, discipline, or something slightly alarming.

The Paintings Remained the Same. We Didn’t.

Look at the women in the old paintings.

The stomachs. The hips. Thighs pressing into silk and velvet. For most of Western history, beauty looked nourished. The painters weren’t documenting exceptions. They were painting ideals.

The canvases never changed.

We did.

She’s taller than you expect. That’s the first thing you see as she towers over you. She fills the room in a way that makes the ceiling feel lower. You can walk right up to her — close enough to read the grain of the marble — which you cannot do with the Mona Lisa, where you’re penned behind a rope ten feet back, straining past strangers’ phones.

Standing that close, you stop thinking about the arms.

Look at her hips.

Her weight has dropped onto one leg, the opposite knee gone soft. Her torso answers by turning the other direction — a slight, almost lazy counter-twist. The drapery bunches where her hip pushes into it and falls loose where gravity takes over. Marble is doing what cloth does.

Her hips and torso don’t align. That disagreement is the whole thing. It’s what makes her feel like she’s mid-movement rather than mid-pose — like someone shifting their weight after standing too long, or about to take a step without thinking about it.

Earlier Greek sculpture didn’t do this. Figures stood straight, frontal, resolved. The Hellenistic period wanted tension instead.

She was found on the island of Melos in 1820, buried and broken, separated from her base.

The base had a signature on it — Alexandros of Antioch — which dated her to the Hellenistic period. Not the "pure" Classical Greece that 19th-century Europe had decided she represented. So the base disappeared. It was quietly removed from the record. The signature went with it. Someone made that call, and for about 130 years it worked.

The arms are a separate thing. They weren't lost to antiquity. We think the most likely explanation is that they were damaged in the scramble over who got to claim her, French naval officers against Ottoman authorities, the statue changing hands fast.

After that, every era took a turn guessing. Early accounts suggested one arm held an apple, a reference to the Judgment of Paris. A 19th-century French sculptor proposed a shield, which would have made her a symbol of national glory at a convenient moment.

Others put a mirror in her hand. Each version said more about what that decade needed her to be than about what she actually was. Nobody knows. The gap is still open.

Early accounts suggest one arm held an apple, a reference to the Judgment of Paris. Others say she was gathering her drapery. Nobody knows. And that gap pulls you in — you complete the gesture in your mind, which is its own kind of power.

Then there’s what she looked like when she was made.

She probably was not white. Almost certainly painted — skin tones, hair, lips, possibly metal jewelry fixed directly into the stone. The eyes were likely inlaid. Two thousand years of weather and handling stripped it all.

What you're standing in front of is the structure beneath the surface, the thing that was never meant to be seen on its own. Whether that's more beautiful or just different is hard to say.

But the white marble goddess — the one that shaped every museum facade and every art school ideal for two centuries — she was a construction. The one in the Louvre is real. They're not the same statue.

When she arrived at the Louvre in 1821, France had just lost its greatest looted works after Napoleon’s fall. The museum needed something to fill the absence. Venus was elevated — positioned alongside the greatest sculptures ever made, the inconvenient details of her origin softened and set aside. It worked. She became essential.

The arms are what everyone photographs. But you’re two corners past the crowd, close enough to see the twist in her torso and the marble going soft where the fabric falls. That’s the part most people miss.

The comments are split every time. One-half treats it like a survivor support group. “Oh my God, that thing is torture.” “So long and boring, holy God.” The other half loves it and wants you to know you're a philistine for finding the first 150 pages slow.

I’ve posted the War & Peace photo several times now. Controversy every time. Which tells you something: This book has a reputation that arrives long before anyone opens it.

The Book Everyone Lies About Reading

Most people haven’t read it. War & Peace lands in the top four on every most-lied-about book list ever compiled. People start it somewhere in the salon scenes, lose the thread among fifty Russian characters with long names, put it down, and tell everyone they finished it.

I’m 600 pages in, and I don’t want to stop.

I Tried to Read War & Peace Four Times. Three Things Changed.

The first is the translation. I’m using the Pevear and Volokhonsky version from 2007. Some of the older translations made Tolstoy heavier and more Victorian than he actually was — formal, dense, nothing like what I’m reading now. Tolstoy wrote conversationally in Russian for his era.

What hardened into “tortuous” in English wasn’t always Tolstoy. A lot of it was a translation wearing its age. If you picked up an older version and put it down, that may be the whole story right there.

The second is a short guide on my phone. Character lists, key relationships, who connects to whom. In the first hundred pages, I referred to it constantly. By page 250, I didn’t need it anymore. The characters were cemented in my brain the way people do when you’ve been around them long enough.

The third is that I’m older. I’ve stopped needing to remember everything. I follow the ten or so characters who carry the story and let the rest drift into the background. Nobody is tracking all 580 of them. The people who say they are, aren’t.

What Nobody Tells You About The First 200 Pages

Here’s what the reputation doesn’t prepare you for. Tolstoy isn’t difficult. He’s just long. And the slow part — the drawing rooms, the French conversation, the endless arrivals — some people argue Tolstoy made it that way on purpose.

The peacetime tedium is the contrast he was building toward. Once you know that, the first 200 pages stop feeling like an obstacle and start feeling like architecture.

Getting through them this time felt like settling a $10,000 credit card debt. I’d failed this book before, more than once, and somewhere around page 200 it opened up, and I had this feeling of — oh. This book is good.

Tolstoy Went and Found Soliders Who Were There

The battle scenes are part of why I read late every night. They don’t read like historical reconstruction — confused, loud, terrifying, the way real things are terrifying rather than dramatic things.

There’s a reason for that. Tolstoy was writing fifty years after the events, and he went and he interviewed dozens of war veterans. Old men by then, sitting with their memories of what it actually felt like to stand in one of those battles.

Nobody was describing Napoleon’s genius to him. They were describing mud and noise, and not knowing what was happening twenty feet away.

My Russian wife — who grew up with this book — didn't know he'd interviewed the veterans. Neither did I, until this reading.

Everyone has an opinion about this book. Most of them haven’t read it. The ones who gave up probably used the wrong translation.

The 2007 translation. A character guide on your phone. That’s the whole barrier.

I said, “Sure. That’s what people do.”

What A Study That Dropped 17,000 Wallets Found Out…

A study conducted by the University of Michigan and the University of Zurich provides provocative clues about honesty and wallets.

Researchers spent three years dropping 17,000 wallets across 335 cities in 40 countries. Some wallets were empty. Others had $13. Some had almost $100.

Every economist in the study said that the more money in the wallet, the fewer people would return it.

Wrong.

In 38 of 40 countries, people were more likely to return wallets containing money than wallets without money. At $13, 61 percent of finders contacted the owner. At $100, that number spiked to 72 percent.

What’s going on here?

One researcher concluded: people didn’t want to see themselves as thieves.

Why?

The same instinct pops up across cultures and centuries that share little. Not language, geography, religion, or history.

C.S. Lewis Noticed This Pattern Before Anyone Ran Studies

C.S. Lewis wrote about man’s tendency to act morally decades before anyone was dropping wallets in field experiments.

Lewis declares in Mere Christianity that every civilization that has ever existed has had a moral law. Not identical rules, but the same structure underneath.

Some things are right.

Some things are wrong.

And people seem to know which is which before anyone teaches them formally.

He then asks where that comes from.

Evolution is the first candidate. But evolution selects for survival and reproduction. This is based on self-interest. The genes that spread are the ones that help the organism compete.

A moral code that tells you to return a stranger’s wallet — at no benefit to yourself — doesn’t obviously follow from that.

Evolution can explain cooperation within a group. It struggles with the impulse to reach out to strangers in 40 countries who will never see you again.

Social conditioning is the second candidate. We learn what’s right from the people around us. That’s clearly true.

But Lewis points out that the same basic structure shows up in societies that never contacted each other, separated by oceans, centuries, and language. You can’t condition people with a rule they never received.

So what’s left?

Cicero Said the Same in 44 BC Before Christ

Cicero noticed something like Lewis’s Law of Human Nature, without the Christian framing. In 44 BC — the year Caesar was killed — he penned De Officiis, a book on moral duty addressed to his son.

He wrote it from exile. The Republic he’d spent his life defending was coming apart. Caesar was dead, and the men fighting over the wreckage weren’t returning anything to anyone. Which makes it stranger and more interesting that he sat down to write about why you should.

He argued that taking someone else’s property violates what he called the law of human fellowship. Not Roman law. Not the Senate’s decree. Something beneath all of that.

A moral code.

Roman law eventually caught up to the instinct. If you found property and knew whose it was, keeping it was theft. The law didn’t invent that principle. It recognized one that the Roman Republic society already knew in its bones.

Cicero would have understood the arched brows at customer service in Greece. He might have said her surprise was the interesting part — not the returning of the wallet, but the expectation that someone wouldn’t.

Cicero spent his career arguing that the morally right choice and the truly useful choice are ultimately the same thing. Returning the wallet costs you nothing. Not returning it costs the other person everything.

The woman at the desk was surprised when I handed her a wallet stuffed with cash. She shouldn’t have been.

The study shows that most people do what I did. They returned the wallet. Not because someone told them to. Not because they calculated the reward. Because something in them already knew what to do with another person’s passport and money.

The moral code in all of us showed up on a concrete pier in Greece, in a thick brown wallet sitting in the sun.

The ruins - well below modern street level - stretch before me, magnificent white and gray marble, glowing in the sinking afternoon sun. Tourists drift past. I stop.

A woman passes on my right and leaves behind a trace of Italian perfume, something floral and warm.

I think about what this place smelled like two thousand years ago.

Not perfume. Garum — fermented fish sauce poured over nearly everything, sharp and briny and inescapable. Roasting meats. Lentils simmering in clay pots. Frankincense drifting from the temple doors. And underneath all of it, the smell of horses and cattle and the manure ground into the stones by thousands of feet and cart wheels every day.

It was not a quiet or delicate place. Men were executed within sight of these temples. The Tarpeian Rock sits just above where I’m standing now — criminals were thrown from it onto the stones below.

I look up at the ruins, and the question comes to me the same way it always does here.

Why do we think these buildings were white?

The answer is that we were wrong for a long time, and in some ways we still are.

What we know now is that the Roman Forum was not a place of white and gray stone. The temples and public buildings were painted. Reds. Blues. Greens. Yellows. Color was everywhere, applied deliberately, meant to be seen from across a crowded square.

Then the centuries performed their relentless work.

Sunlight bleaches pigment slowly and without mercy. Rain pulls it off in layers, season after season, decade after decade. The binders — wax, egg tempera, the organic materials that held color to stone — broke down and washed away long before anyone thought to look for them. What remained was the marble underneath. Hard, pale, indifferent to time. The bones of the buildings survived. The skin didn’t.

By the time Renaissance artists and scholars began studying these ruins in the 14th and 15th centuries, the color was almost entirely gone. What they saw was white marble. And here’s the part that’s hard to believe: they didn’t think the color had disappeared. They thought the white marble was the point.

The brilliant Greeks and Romans, whose achievements in philosophy and politics they revered, had surely chosen to leave their marble bare — pure form, pure intellect, no need for decoration. Painting sculpture was something less refined minds did. Medieval minds.

The white marble wasn’t a stripped ruin. It was, they decided, a statement of genius.

So Michelangelo carved in unpainted white marble. Renaissance architects built in unpainted white stone. And the aesthetic they established — monochrome and severe — became the definition of the classical ideal for centuries to come.

Making some of the original colors had been anything but austere.

Blue didn’t exist in nature in a form you could just apply to a wall. Roman craftsmen made it by heating sand, crushed copper, limestone, and soda in high-temperature kilns — pushing the furnace to nearly a thousand degrees, feeding wood and charcoal into the fire, and standing close enough to feel the heat scald their skin.

What came out was hard and brittle. They broke it apart with hammers and ground it down by hand until it became a fine powder. Egyptian blue. It stained workers’ hands for days afterward.

If you saw blue on a building in Rome, someone had worked hard for it. It meant wealth. It meant intention.

Today, we can actually see what’s left of that intention, even when the eye can’t. Ultraviolet light and multispectral imaging — technologies that detect light far beyond what we can see — can detect traces of pigment still clinging to marble surfaces after two thousand years. Microscopic flecks of Egyptian blue. Traces of red ochre. The color is mostly gone, but it left fingerprints.

The Renaissance had none of that. What they had were beautiful white ruins, and a theory to explain them.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Thomas Jefferson visited France in the 1780s as American minister and saw the ruins of the classical world with his own eyes. He was obsessed with architecture — self-taught, working from the Italian architect Palladio’s books.

When he stood before the Maison Carrée, a well-preserved Roman temple in the south of France, he knew exactly what he wanted to do with it. He used it as the model for the Virginia State Capitol.

Later, as Secretary of State, he worked on the design of Washington, D.C., itself, pushing for a capital that projected the weight of antiquity. He sketched a design for the U.S. Capitol based on the Roman Pantheon.

What he saw when he looked at those ruins was what everyone saw — white stone, gray columns, clean marble lines. Magnificent and permanent.

Nobody in the 1780s knew the buildings had been painted.

The style spread fast. By the mid-1800s, Greek and Roman Revival architecture was everywhere in America — courthouses, banks, state capitols, plantation houses.

Builders were putting up white columns everywhere from Philadelphia to Tennessee. It became so closely associated with the young country that people called it the National Style.

All of it was built from the same source material: bleached ruins that a previous century had decided were pristine on purpose.

So here’s the irony I keep turning over as I stand in the Forum.

Washington, D.C., looks like ancient Rome. The Lincoln Memorial looks like a Greek temple. The Supreme Court looks like the Parthenon.

But ancient Rome didn’t look like ancient Rome. Not the version we copied.

America built a copy of a ruin, and the ruin was already missing half of what made it real. And the people who handed it to us thought the missing half was never there to begin with.

I walk further into the Forum past tourists with strollers.

Somewhere nearby, a child is eating gelato, and the smell of it — something with strawberry, sweet and cold — drifts past me for a second, and then it’s gone.

I look back up at the white-and-gray marble glowing in the afternoon sun.

It’s a beautiful sight. And somewhere in the last two thousand years, between the rain and the sun and the Renaissance and Thomas Jefferson, a string of entirely reasonable decisions added up to something that was never quite real. Artists copied what they saw. Architects copied the artists. A new nation copied the architects, and nobody along the way thought to question what had been lost.

May 1863, Virginia wilderness. A group of nervous Confederate soldiers heard movement in the trees after dark and opened fire. Jackson took three bullets. He died eight days later. This week marks the anniversary of that battle — Chancellorsville — arguably Robert E. Lee’s greatest victory, won while outnumbered nearly two to one.

My daughter went to Virginia Military Institute, where Jackson taught before the war. When she arrived as a first-year student, she was required to salute the Stonewall Jackson statue every time she entered or left the barracks. That detail stayed with me. It sent me down a rabbit hole — not about Jackson exactly, but about something connected to him. Something I had completely wrong.

The Rebel Yell.

Most of what Americans know about the Rebel Yell comes from Hollywood. A “yee-haw,” a cowboy whoop, the kind of sound you hear at a rodeo. A “yee-haw” is celebratory. It doesn’t sound like something that freezes a man where he stands.

In the 1920s and 1930s, researchers tracked down elderly Confederate veterans — men in their 80s and 90s — and recorded them doing it. The recordings exist. I’ll link to one below.

They sound nothing like a “yee-haw.”

The closest description I can offer is a shriek crossed with a bark. High-pitched, jagged, not quite human. I tried to replicate it after hearing the recordings. My voice isn’t built for it.

Union soldiers who heard it from a distance had a saying: it was either “Jackson, or a rabbit.” The sound was that close to a rabbit’s scream.

Another recording got fed into audio software and multiplied — thousands of voices doing that shrieking bark at once. Picture an open field. Smoke hanging low. Ground churned up beneath your boots. Then that sound, rolling toward you out of the haze.

That sound has a specific origin. It happened on the same afternoon Stonewall Jackson became Stonewall Jackson.

July 21, 1861. First Battle of Bull Run. The Union had come out expecting a quick finish — Lincoln called for 90-day volunteers, that’s how fast everyone assumed this would end. Families rode in from Washington, D.C., to watch the show, where the Union Army would end the rebellion in days. The battle eventually became a Confederate rout.

Late in the afternoon, with the battle turning, Jackson ordered his men to hold their fire until the enemy closed to within 50 yards. Then he gave the order: “Fire and give them the bayonet. And when you charge, yell like furies.”

Union troops heard it for the first time, and it stopped them cold.

That same afternoon, a Confederate general named Barnard Bee pointed at Jackson’s brigade and shouted: “There is Jackson standing like a stone wall.” Bee took a bullet through the stomach shortly after. He died the next day. The name stuck.

The Rebel Yell and the Stonewall nickname — both born on the same hill, on the same July afternoon, two years before Jackson was shot by his own men in the dark at Chancellorsville.

There’s something about Jackson worth knowing, and I didn’t learn it until my daughter went to VMI.

He taught Natural and Experimental Philosophy — essentially physics — and artillery tactics. The physics part was the problem. His natural philosophy classes covered physics, astronomy, and other subjects he had never actually studied.

His solution was to memorize his lectures the night before and deliver them verbatim the next day. If a cadet didn’t understand something and asked him to explain it, Jackson would read the passage again. A little louder this time. That was his entire pedagogy.

VMI’s own superintendent wrote: “As Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy, Major Jackson was not a success. He had not the qualifications needed for so important a chair.”

The cadets knew it. They drew caricatures of him on the blackboard — usually an officer with enormous feet, which earned him the nickname “Square Box.” They threw spitballs when his back was turned, dropped bricks as he walked under barracks windows, and pulled linchpins from cannon wheels during artillery drill.

One cadet challenged him to a duel and got court-martialed for it. A group of alumni formally petitioned the board to have him removed. None of it worked.

He stayed ten years.

Something changed as cadets moved into their senior years. The ridicule of freshmen became the respect of upperclassmen. They started to see what he was actually trying to do. He wasn’t teaching physics. He was teaching discipline, obedience, and the capacity to function under pressure. The classroom was the room where it happened.

Then the war started, and the terrible professor became a legendary leader of men.

Within two years, Jackson’s name was known across Europe. His Shenandoah Valley campaigns were studied by military minds in France and Britain. The secret wasn’t strategy alone — it was speed, and the speed came from stripping everything down to almost nothing.

His men carried a day’s rations in a haversack. Not much else. No excess, no comfort, nothing that slowed a march. He pushed them until their legs gave out, then pushed them further. He showed up where he couldn’t possibly be. Commanders on the other side kept making plans based on where Jackson was, and he kept being somewhere else entirely.

You’d think the men hated him for it. Sometimes they did. But the accounts from that period say something else — that he was cheered wherever he went among his troops. They respected him in the way soldiers respect a commander who runs them hard because he knows what he’s doing. They sensed he cared about them, even when he was grinding them into the dirt. That combination — relentless and trusted — is rare in any era.

He was shot before anyone could see how far it would go.

In 2020, VMI removed the statue my daughter used to salute. Strong feelings on all sides, and people I respect disagree about it. What stays with me is simpler than the argument: the statue pointed back toward a man who turned out to be one of the more extraordinary military minds in American history. You never would have guessed it, sitting in his classroom.

That gap between who someone appears to be and who they turn out to be — that’s the thing.

Same as the Rebel Yell. We thought we knew what it sounded like. We were wrong.

When the USSR fell and the ruble collapsed, mines and factories across Russia began to fail. Kadykchan. Vorkuta. Pikalyovo. Men who’d walked the same route to work for decades suddenly had nowhere to go. Snow crunched under their boots as they passed dead smokestacks, ice crusting eyebrows and mustaches, breath hanging in subzero air.

On the long Siberian nights, copper wire began to vanish from those same communities—anything of value often disappeared—from factory yards, warehouses, and the power lines that once lit the towns.

It wasn’t vandalism. It was survival: wire turned into dark, bitter bread, fur hats, potatoes, a few more days of vodka-softened numbness. The buildings became shells, all the metal veins pulled out.

That image stayed with me for years.

I didn’t expect the memory to surface again on a hot hillside in Croatia in 2023.

On Hvar Island, I was climbing through a different kind of ruin. The sun was high and unkind, pressing down on my shoulders. Every step sent gravel crunching and sliding under my boots. Dry thistles and scrubby sage scraped against my ankles and calves, leaving faint red streaks; somewhere in the heat, there was a resinous whiff of wild rosemary.

These terraces have been feeding someone’s empire for two thousand years. Long before anyone called this Hvar, these same slopes were worked for Rome—grapes and olives coaxed out of thin soil and limestone, part of the vast empire’s wine and oil supply line. The hills were a dull brown and gray, stitched with stone terraces and low walls that looked as old as the land itself.

Sweat trickled down my spine, and my fingers turned chalky from catching myself on rough rock when the path shifted. We weren’t on a marked trail, just a hint of one—a faint track worn into the hillside.

For a long stretch, it was only the sound of our footsteps, the rasp of insects in the dry grass, and the occasional gust of hot wind. Then the landscape shifted: a wall too straight to be natural, a rusted car frame half-buried in dust, a narrow path edged with stones, leading nowhere.

The ghost town Malo Grablje appeared as we crested a rise.

At first, it was just a few rooflines jutting from the slope, then the outline of a window, then a cluster of stone houses clinging to the hillside.

As we stepped closer, the village resolved into streets and open windows and doorways, a church, businesses long gone, houses with shutters open to a sky no one lived under anymore.

In one dark room in a vacant shop, two massive stone wheels still hugged a rusted basin — the old olive mill, waiting for a harvest that would never come.

The stonework in town was still solid, thick walls holding their shape against gravity and time. It felt less like a ruin and more like a place that had been paused.

Inside some houses, chairs and tables were still there, as if someone had just stood up and never returned. Old plaster peeled from gray walls; you could see the pale rectangles where a picture or a cross once hung, the ghost-outline of a domestic life cut short.

Dust lay thick on the floors, but all the rooms we saw were recognizably human — spaces meant for cooking, sleeping, arguing, laughing. I stepped carefully, feeling like an intruder in someone else’s absence.

Out on a narrow ledge between two houses, I pulled out my phone and hunted for a signal in the heat haze. One bar flickered. I typed the name from a weathered sign: Malo Grablje. A few lines of text popped onto the black screen.

An old hillside village on Hvar, emptied since the late 1960s. Disease in the vineyards and olives. Economic changes that pulled life down toward the coast—toward Milna and Hvar Town, toward tourism, ports, and all the places where money still moved. The hills stayed behind. Malo Grablje thinned out and then went quiet. Doors and windows left open.

Standing there, with the sun beating down and dust on my tongue, I thought of those Russian villages I’d passed through. Different maps, different languages, different empires — but the pattern held.

Most communities exist because they have a reason: a factory, a mine, a railway, a harbor, a crop that still sells. When that reason vanishes, so does the logic of the place.

In Russia, the collapse was sudden and chaotic, tied to the fall of the Soviet Union and the violent birth of a market economy. People cannibalized the landscape to stay alive a little longer. The infrastructure died, so the people wouldn’t, at least not immediately.

On Hvar, the story was slower, stretching over decades of agricultural disease and shifting economic tides along the Dalatian coast. Here, the abandonment moved faster. Families moved the mainland. Graves were exhumed and reburied.

Houses were locked, or left open to the mild weather. No one needed to strip copper to survive; instead, the village itself was stripped of purpose. No work, no services, no reason for the next generation to stay.

That difference matters, but so does the echo between them. Both places are what happens when economic logic decides a community no longer justifies its existence. It doesn’t matter whether the language for that logic is communist or capitalist, imperial or post-imperial. Somewhere, someone decides the cost of keeping a place alive now exceeds its value. After that, the rest is just time and weather.

On the way back down from Malo Grablje, the crunch of gravel under my boots sounded different. The weeds brushed my legs like they were trying to hold on, insisting this had once been a lived-in landscape, not a backdrop. The village shrank behind us until it slid into the late-afternoon shadow of the hill.

But in my head it remained alongside those Russian towns with their dead factories and darkened apartment blocks, part of the same quiet archive of places the modern world has decided it can discard.

Empires rise and fall, currencies inflate and collapse, borders move. The rhetoric changes. The outcome for small places on the wrong side of “progress” rarely does. People drink, or steal, or leave. Copper wire disappears in the night. Villages empty out and wait in sun or snow, long after the last rational reason to live there is gone.

You don’t enter Diocletian’s Palace the way you enter a ruin, because it never became one. It has stayed lived‑in for centuries.

One moment you’re in open light, the Adriatic flaring off the water and white stone, heat pressing up from the brick pavement. Then the narrow street tightens, the air cools, and the light thins into pale strips that slide down the walls.

Stone closes in on both sides — pitted, rough, sun‑warmed limestone you can drag your fingers across. You feel tiny chips and old tool marks.

A Roman Emperor’s Retirement - Built Like an Empire

Diocletian did not build this palace to rest. He built it to control the end of his life the same way he controlled the empire.

After decades of instability — brutal civil wars, collapsing currency, emperors rising and falling in quick succession — he stepped down voluntarily and came here to construct a walled compound the size of a small city.

The outer walls still feel defensive when you get close to them: thick limestone courses stacked in clean, steady lines, their edges softened by centuries but their mass unmistakable. The gates cut through them with orecise geometry, aligned to the compasss like decisions snapped to a grid.

This was not a villa. It was engineered like a military installation: towers set where they could see furthest; streets and courtyards organized as if someone had drawn them with a straightedge on wet sand. Even now, when you walk, you feel nudged — turned, narrowed, released into open space — by a plan laid down seventeen hundred years ago. Even in retirement, he imposed order on everything around him.

Diocletian dragged the empire back from the brink. He split power between four co‑emperors to stop the endless civil wars, overhauled the bureaucracy and the army, and tried to tame runaway inflation with new taxes, new coins, and even maximum‑price laws. For a while, borders held, the army was paid, and the chaos of the third‑century crisis finally eased.

His reforms held the empire together, but they came with weight: more bureaucracy, more rules, more stone around everything. You can feel that weight in the palace itself—thick walls, tight gates, movement channeled into narrow paths instead of open choice.

The Ground That Remembers Every Footstep

Walk deeper and the ground tells the story before anything else does. The cracked stone beneath your feet dips slightly in the center, worn into shallow channels where countless steps have passed.

The surface is slick in places, polished to a soft sheen by hundreds of years of contact: Roman boots striking hard, cart wheels rattling, sandals scraping, medieval traders shuffling, modern sneakers sliding on the same faint slope.

Look up and around, and you see how much was poured into the original palace frame. After the empire, people didn’t ring the palace with a new town — they moved directly inside it. They built homes and workshops in leftover courtyards, wedged walls into Roman arcades, stacked living rooms above old service passages.

In some narrow, shaded lanes, you can stretch out your arms and touch stone from a dozen different centuries at once: a Roman block at your left palm, a later medieval wall at your right, a modern drainpipe cutting between them.

The palace did not fall into ruin and silence after Rome. People who came later absorbed and repurposed it.

Down to the Underworld: Sewers and Ghost Rooms

The basement corridors stretch out in long, vaulted lines, the ceiling low enough in places that the air feels close to your face. The temperature drops and humidity rises as you step lower. It’s cool, damp, smelling faintly of stone dust and old moisture. Footsteps land heavier here, each one sending a dull echo up into the curves of the vaults before it dies.

These chambers were never meant to impress anyone. They were built to carry waste. Everything above—living quarters, kitchens, imperial halls — drained into this system and flowed outward toward the sea. The layout is not random.

The plan of these underground rooms matches, almost exactly, the floor plan of the vanished imperial apartments that once rested above them, like a stone negative. Walking through these dim corridors is like moving through the ghost‑shape of Diocletian’s private world, stripped of decoration and flipped upside down.

For centuries after the empire faded, locals continued using these spaces for the same purpose. Sewage descended through hundreds of holes resident cut above.

They also stored goods down here, dumped rubbish and debris, let mud and trash pile up until some vaults were choked with fill.

Ironically, that neglect —treating the cellars as a dump and storage pit — sealed their surfaces away from weather and vandalism. The most intact Roman architecture in the complex is the part the city tried hardest to forget.

From Sewer to Wedding Hall

Now those same corridors host weddings. Lights are strung across stone arches, small warm bulbs casting soft halos on the rough vaults. Tables are set where waste once moved in darkness. Voices rise in laughter where water and sewage used to rush; heels click on floors once littered with refuse. Music curls around the arches, bouncing just enough to feel thick in the air.

People stand in formal clothes, raising glasses beneath ceilings designed not to impress them, but to support an emperor’s rooms overhead. The smell is gone, the function transformed, but the structure remains exactly what it always was: a system built to support life above. The meaning has been altered, but Dioclecian’s design endures.

The Emperor Who Chose Cabbages

Then there is the detail that feels almost out of place. After building this fortress and stabilizing an empire, Diocletian left it behind. He moved inland, away from the sea and the stone and the echoing courtyards, and grew cabbages.

Imagine the shift in texture: from hard limestone underfoot to soil that gives a little when you press your heel into it. Dioclecian receded from the smell of salt and cool masonry to the dense, green scent of plants and earth after rain. That was the life the emperor chose.

When later rulers asked him to return to power, he refused, saying that if they could see what he had grown with his own hands, they would not ask again. After decades of ruling millions from a place built to stage his presence, he chose black soil, routine, and something he could control directly, with fingers instead of decrees.

What Dioclecian Palace Proved

Dioclecian’s reforms held the empire together, but they came with a burden: more bureaucracy, more rules, more stone around everything. You can feel that weight in the palace itself — thick walls, tight gates, movement channeled into narrow alleys.

Yet the building outlived his system because it could be reused. People turned gates into doorways, barracks into apartments, sewers into wedding halls. The empire he tried to stabilize broke and reformed; his retirement fortress quietly became a city. And then a tourist destination today.

1. The stepping stones aren’t random

Most people walk right over them without noticing.

Over centuries, debris, collapse, and rebuilding raised the ground. The ancient city didn’t disappear.

3. For centuries, the Forum was a cow pasture

After the empire fell, no one preserved the Forum.

They forgot it.

Grass grew between broken columns. Animals wandered through what had been the center of Roman life.

It was called Campo Vaccino—the cow field.

The silence you feel there today isn’t new.

4. The Pantheon’s columns are shorter than intended

The granite columns of the Pantheon came from Egypt.

But something went wrong.

They arrived shorter than planned—cut or damaged before shipment. Instead of redesigning the building, the Romans adjusted everything else to fit.

You’re looking at a compromise executed so precisely it feels intentional.

5. Rain falls through the Pantheon—and it still doesn’t flood

Stand under the oculus in the Pantheon during rain.

You’ll hear it before you see it—drops hitting stone, echoing upward into the dome.

Water falls directly onto the floor.

Look down and you’ll notice slight slopes and small, almost invisible drains cut into the marble.

It disappears as fast as it lands.

6. The Rostra displayed more than speeches

The Rostra was where leaders addressed the public.

But not every message was spoken.

After political violence, heads and hands of enemies were displayed there as warnings.

8. Blue was rare—and difficult to make

Red was easy. Yellow came from the earth.

Blue was different.

To make it, Romans had to heat sand, copper, and minerals to high temperatures in controlled conditions. The result—Egyptian blue—was expensive and used sparingly.

When you see traces of it, you’re looking at something deliberately rare.

9. The Pantheon’s bronze ceiling was stripped and reused

The Pantheon once had bronze panels lining parts of its structure.

They’re gone.

In the 1600s, much of that metal was removed, melted down, and reused elsewhere in the city.

What feels ancient and untouched has already been taken once.

10. They stripped ancient Rome for parts

After the fall, Rome wasn’t preserved.

It was dismantled.

Marble was burned into lime. Stone was pulled from temples. Bronze was melted and recast.

Walk through the city and you’ll see pieces of older Rome built into newer walls.

What survived isn’t everything. It’s what no one took.

Most people land in Rome and order pizza.

Don’t.

That’s how you miss the entire point of the city.

They often leave without ever tasting what the city actually does best. I didn’t understand this the first time I went either.

A better move: You order carbonara. You think you know what’s coming. After all, you had carbonara in the US.

You don’t know.

You’re sitting outside on a narrow street in Trastevere. Or maybe near Campo de’ Fiori.

Metal chairs scrape stone. Glasses knock lightly on white tablecloths. A scooter cuts through the street behind you. Bread hits the table. No butter.

Red wine. Dark. Slightly warm.

The waiter doesn’t explain anything.

Plates start moving. You smell it before you see it—

hot fat, sharp pecorino, black pepper opening in the air.

Then the steaming plate lands. Carbonera Rome style.

No cream. No pool of sauce.

Just pasta — glossy, tight, almost dry-looking at first glance.

No Cream. Not Ever.

The creaminess isn’t cream. It’s an emulsion.

Egg yolk. Pasta water. Rendered fat. Heat. Timing.

Look closely. The sauce doesn’t sit under the pasta.

Today, that coast is miles away. Nothing about this place feels like the sea.

Over time, everything organic broke down, until all that remained was a hollow in the hardened ash — an exact negative of a human being caught in their final position.

In the 1800s, archaeologists realized what they were seeing. The voids were not random. They were shaped by people who had been there, bodies that had resisted for a moment and then perished.

Then they were gone, and all that remains is the empty void.

What remains is not the person. It is the moment they died, preserved with unsettling precision.

In ancient Rome, burials were placed outside the city, far from the Roman Forum and Pantheon, often along major roads like this one.

These tombs belonged to wealthier Romans, whose families could afford carved marble monuments in highly visible places. Their names, faces, and achievements were meant to be seen by everyone passing by.

By the time the tombs were opened, the bodies were gone or reduced to ash.

The marble itself became the target. It was too valuable to leave behind. Grave robbers—and later builders—pulled out inscriptions, reliefs, and entire carved blocks.

The pieces weren’t discarded. They were set into new walls and buildings.

Walk the Appian Way today, and you can still see them: fragments of gravestones set into walls, broken figures embedded in brick, names split across reused slabs.

The tombs were taken apart. The pieces are still here, built into the walls.

They Cut Tombs Apart to Build New Walls

The marble from Roman graves wasn’t reused as whole monuments.

It was broken apart.

Large tomb slabs were struck with hammers and split with iron wedges. Edges were trimmed with chisels until the pieces were small enough to carry and fit into new construction. Anything that couldn’t be used as-is was cut again.

The carvings didn’t matter.

Reliefs were turned sideways. Inscriptions were split across multiple pieces. Faces were broken off or buried into the wall. What had once been a name or a figure became just another block.

Then the pieces were set into place in new walls and buildings.

Rough brick walls went up, and marble fragments were pressed into them with mortar — filling gaps, reinforcing corners, or replacing missing stone. You can still see the contrast: smooth, white marble set against darker, uneven brick.

Nothing was matched. Pieces from different tombs ended up next to each other. Different sizes, different styles, different centuries—set into a single wall.

The result is uneven. A name cut off mid-word. A figure turned sideways to fit the space.

By the time this happened, the tombs had already been opened. Anything of value was gone.

What lines the Appian Way now isn’t a row of intact tombs. It’s what was left after they were broken apart.

Fragments of names. Pieces of figures. Cut stone set into later walls, with no concern for what it once meant.

The road is still there — stone blocks worn smooth, grooves cut by carts moving over them two thousand years ago.

So are the tombs.

Just in pieces.

Men climbed over broken columns carrying iron hammers and picks.

Metal struck stone — sharp, ringing blows that echoed through empty arches. Sometimes, cows grazed nearby.

They jammed picks into seams and drove chisels into hairline cracks.

The wedges came next. The men hammered them in deep, until the massive stones shifted. Long iron bars were slid into the gaps. Pressure built slowly, then a sudden break as the blocks tore loose.

They didn’t just chip at the surface. They drove iron into the joints, pried the stones apart, and tore out the metal that held Rome together.

They weren’t preserving ancient Rome. They were ripping it apart.

Marble was removed - block by block. Ropes tightened, and horses pulled. Stone scraped across the dirt and weeds. Sweating men and straining beasts against the weight.

What tourists see in the Roman Forum today was mostly intact for hundreds of years. Until it was stripped for parts.

The Trevi Fountain and parts of Vatican City were built from what was taken. But stone was not the only target.

In the Middle Ages, metal was harder to produce than marble. Iron had value. Bronze was worth much more.

So, men climbed on ancient buildings like the Temple of Vesta again. They found iron clamps buried in the stones. Drove picks into the marble seams and tore the brackets and braces out.

Sometimes they heated the metal clamps until they expanded. Then, shock-cooled them with cold water until the stone shattered around them.

You can see the result today.

Stand beside a column in the Roman Forum and look closely. You’ll see small rectangular holes cut into the stone, often just a few inches wide, spaced in a line where blocks meet.

They’re too clean to be damage, and too deliberate to be decay. Each one marks where an iron or bronze clamp once sat, locking two stones together from the inside.

The metal is gone in the Forum and the Pantheon. Only the empty cuts remain.

The gouges aren’t weathering. They’re wounds.

Rough-edged cavities punched into the surface where metal once held the structure tight.

Stand close and trace them with your fingers — cold, uneven, torn open.

Rome wasn’t just abandoned after the fall. It was dismantled, piece by piece.

Painted in July 1890, just outside the village where he would die.
But where?

The exact hillside still exists. You can stand there today.

For decades, no one knew where it was.
The painting felt chaotic. Almost abstract.

It isn’t.
But what was the inspiration?

Then in 2020, Dutch researcher Wouter van der Veen found something unexpected.

A black-and-white postcard from around 1900.

It showed a sloped hillside in France —
cut back from the road, with a tangle of exposed roots pushing out of the earth.

Not similar.
The same.

The angles matched.
The shapes matched.
Even the direction of the slope matched what van Gogh painted.

The roots weren’t random growth.

They were exposed by a man-made cut —
earth carved away in the 19th century to widen the road,
leaving the roots hanging in the open air.

The location is in Auvers-sur-Oise,
the village where van Gogh spent the final weeks of his life.

Not deep in a forest.
Not out in a field.

A roadside embankment on Rue Daubigny.
Just outside town.

He painted it in broad daylight.

Thick paint.
Compressed strokes.
No open space.

No horizon.
No sky.

Just roots—twisting, overlapping, filling the entire frame.

Not a landscape.

A surface you can’t escape.

The roots are still there today.
Growing from the same slope.
Twisting out of the same cut earth he stood in front of.

Only a short walk from the inn where he was staying.

Which changes the painting.
