The Marathon story.

A Greek runner sprinted 26 miles from Marathon to Athens with news of a stunning victory. Panted “Nike!” — and keeled over dead.

And thus our term ‘marathon.’ Boston’s been running theirs since 1897.

A miraculous tale. Didn’t happen.

Herodotus, the so-called ‘Father of History,’ wrote the earliest account of the Battle of Marathon, working about forty years after the fact.

He never recorded that a messenger died, and no dramatic 26-mile run to Athens to spread the happy news.

But what Herodotus did write is even stranger: two miracle runs that are completely true.

One of them, a man who ran 150 miles through mountains, alone, before the Battle of Marathon, in a desperate plea for help.

His name?

The hemerodromos Philippides.

A trained day-runner. Athens kept a few on hand for exactly this kind of emergency.

No Horse Could Make This Run

You’ve felt beat after a long day. Now imagine 36 hours of exhaustion, 150 miles, uphill, with your city’s survival on the line.

Nope, a horse was out.

The tortuous route cuts through the Peloponnese mountains. Narrow goat paths, loose rock, steep grades no animal could manage.

Greece didn’t have a network of roads built for riders either.

Philippides would have carried almost nothing. A runner moving that fast couldn’t afford the weight of supplies. Water came from mountain streams, not anything he packed.

Food, if he stopped at all, was whatever a runner in that era carried for endurance: figs, maybe barley cake, eaten on the move. Sweat and dust would have caked together in the heat, the kind of grime that doesn’t wash off until the run is finished.

He’d have known what was riding on his legs.

No Athens without Sparta’s spears. No Sparta’s spears without him crossing 150 miles of rock before his body gave out. One man, and an entire city’s survival waiting on whether he made it.

Philippides finished in about 36 hours.

Athens didn’t improvise the run on the fly. Greek city-states maintained a stable of these runners, ready for exactly this kind of emergency. The ancient Pony Express, but on foot, alone, through parched, hellish mountains.

Skeptics doubted the feat for centuries. Herodotus wasn’t around to prove it. Someone else did.

In 1982, 56-year-old RAF Wing Commander John Foden decided to find out. He and four other officers flew to Greece and ran the actual route Herodotus described.

Three of them made it inside the 36-hour window. Foden himself crossed into Sparta at 37 hours and 37 minutes, close enough to call it confirmed. The event they created still runs every year. It’s called the Spartathlon.

Herodotus records in Book 6, chapter 105, that Philippides claimed to have encountered the god Pan along the way, who asked why Athens had been neglecting him.

Sparta agreed to send troops. But not yet. Religious law forbade marching before the full moon. Help was coming.

Not in time to save the day at Marathon. The Athenians would fight the Persians alone.

The Battle Joined

A wide plain, dust and scrub grass, flat and open, hemmed by hills on one side and the sea on the other. Ground that gave the Persian cavalry ample room to work.

Hadrian’s Wall wasn’t built out of fear, or because Rome had hit some limit it couldn’t push past.

It was about where Rome decided to call it quits, for good reason.

If you learned Rome the way most people did in high school, this part seems out of the empire’s character.

By the time Trajan died in 117 AD, Rome had maxed out what it could control.

His legions crossed the Danube twice to take Dacia, roughly Romania today.

The first war, 101 AD, ended in a forced treaty. The second, in 105, broke that peace for good.

Roman legions sieged the Dacian capital, cut off its water, and drove King Decebalus to kill himself rather than be captured alive.

Rome came home with vast piles of his treasure and threw a four-month victory party.

Conquest was the empire's entire personality.

More territory meant more glory, and more glory was the point of being emperor.

Then Hadrian took over. And he changed everything.

“Here’s Your Land Back.”

Trajan had spent three years and thousands of lives taking Mesopotamia. Legions crossed the Euphrates, sacked the Parthian capital at Ctesiphon. Pushing all the way to the Persian Gulf, farther east than any Roman army had ever gone.

Then the land grab fell apart.

Revolts broke out across the conquered territory, Roman garrisons got run out of their own new cities, and Trajan died before he could finish what he started.

Hadrian sat down on the sella curulis, the plain folding chair Roman emperors used instead of a throne. He looked at the mess and said “enough.”

His reasoning survived the centuries, recorded in an old Roman biography, one of the only firsthand accounts we have.

Any territory Rome couldn’t realistically hold and defend, Hadrian reasoned, should be let go rather than bled dry trying to keep it.

Not out of weakness or fear. Just a practical read of what Rome could sustain.

Not everyone in Rome bought that view at the time. Some of Trajan’s old generals saw Hadrian’s reversal as a betrayal of everything they’d just bled for.

He looked at what Rome had and decided the job wasn’t to take more. It was to hold what it already had, not expand it.

Nowhere did he make that decision more permanent than in Britain….

Caesar Outnumbered 2 to 1

Julius Caesar faced Pompey the Great with roughly 22,000 infantry against Pompey’s 45,000. The cavalry gap was ridiculous: 7,000 horsemen for Pompey against barely 1,000 for Caesar.

On papyrus, this was a slaughter in the making.

One thing though.

Caesar possessed a critical advantage most forget. Not a weapon. Not a formation.

He knew the general who used to be his understudy.

Titus Labienus Knew Almost Every Caesar Trick

Titus Labienus spent eight years as Caesar’s second-in-command during the Gallic Wars, 58 to 50 BC.

Labienus was no mere subordinate.

He was the general Caesar trusted to run entire campaigns alone while Caesar sailed for Britain or rode south to handle politics in Cisalpine Gaul.

Labienus knew Caesar’s instincts on a battlefield the way your longtime business partner knows how you negotiate at a conference table.

Which tactics he leaned on and the risks he was willing to take. How he liked to bait an enemy into overcommitting with aggressive troops, until they walked into lethal traps.

Then the civil war erupted.

Labienus chose Pompey.

The Senate, backed by Pompey, ordered Caesar to disband his army and return to Rome as a private citizen.

He would be stripped of the power that had once protected him from prosecution. Caesar refused.

He crossed the Rubicon with his legions instead. The two men who’d once ruled together became the two bitter enemies.

In a deathmatch for Rome.

By the time the two armies faced each other at Pharsalus, Labienus wasn’t just battling his old commander.

He led Pompey’s cavalry, the single unit meant to decide the entire battle. Seven thousand expert horsemen, led by the one man alive who understood exactly how Caesar thought.

You might expect a result like Tyson vs. Spinks. A wipeout, over before anyone broke a sweat.

Pompey had the overwhelming numbers. Labienus knew Caesar’s tactics. Cavalry decided battles like this.

Everyone knew it — a century and a half earlier, an out-cavalried Roman army had been encircled and slaughtered at Cannae.

The evidence pointed to Pompey demolishing Caesar.

Spears as Swords, Not Missiles

Most retellings of Pharsalus skip this part. We won’t.

Caesar didn’t just reposition his infantry and hope to surprise Pompey. He pulled 3,000 grizzled veterans, six cohorts, from his third line and hid them behind his own cavalry.

Then he issued a startling order that broke every rule of Roman warfare.

He commanded his infantry to charge the cavalry.

Don’t throw your javelins. Hold them like spears. Aim for the face. Slash and gouge out their eyes.

What?

Infantry doesn’t charge cavalry.

It’s unthinkable. A guaranteed bloodbath.

But Caesar had noticed an important weakness about Pompey’s cavalry that had nothing to do with tactics..…

Hannibal didn’t just beat the Romans at Cannae on Aug. 2, 216 BC. He surrounded and annihilated them.

His cavalry outnumbered Rome's two to one. They swept around behind the legions and slammed the trap shut.

The legions found themselves boxed in on every side. Packed too tight to raise a sword arm. Thousands were crushed or suffocated in the crowd before a blade ever reached them.

Scipio barely survived the Cannae massacre.

He’d spend the rest of the Second Punic War doing something no Roman before him had bothered to try:

Studying how Hannibal won, instead of just trying to out-slug him.

The Kid Who Wouldn’t Let Rome Quit

Rome took Cannae hard.

So hard the Senate buried four people alive in the Forum as a sacrifice to the gods, Gauls and Greeks, a ritual Romans themselves called foreign to their own religion.

They hadn't done it in generations. They didn't know how to deal with such a huge loss.

The survivors didn’t march back to Rome. They regrouped at Canusium, dust and dried blood caked into torn tunics, some men still missing their shields, weapons, anything they’d dropped just to get out alive.

It was the tattered remnant of an army that had lost up to 70,000 men in one bloody day, on a field in southern Italy. The worst one-day defeat in Roman history.

While Rome tore itself apart looking for anything that might save it, one twenty-year-old tribune wasn’t asking the gods for help.

Scipio was at Canusium, barely 20, a military tribune, one of the few senior officers who made it out with his life.

He overheard a group of young nobles among the survivors deciding Rome was history.

Their plan: abandon Italy, sell their military service to a foreign king, and let the Republic collapse without them.

He was outraged.

As Livy tells it, Scipio walked into the room where they were meeting. He drew his sword and held it over their heads.

He warned that he’d treat as an enemy “everyone who would not swear what he dictated.” Every man in the room swore: they would never abandon Rome.

The plot dissolved.

Five years later, Scipio’s father was dead too, ambushed by Hasdrubal’s forces in Spain in 211 BC. The following year, the Senate offered the command to more experienced generals first.

No one wanted anything to do with it. Except one.

The S - - - Job Nobody Wanted

You’ve probably had an ugly job before. Scipio grabbed his, to avenge his father: command in Spain, the same province that had already killed him and his uncle.

No purple cloak, no army of his own yet. Just a 20-year-old tribune and a job no senior general would touch.

Scipio fought Carthaginian armies for five years in Spain. The Roman student honed his craft for a future meeting with the Carthaginian teacher.

At Baecula in 208 BC, he broke from standard Roman formation to hit Hasdrubal Barca’s flanks at once. It was his first real test against the family that had killed his father.

Two years later at Ilipa, he spent days lulling the Carthaginian commanders into routine, predictable formations. Then he flipped his own lineup at dawn and surrounded their army on both sides.

The same double envelopment Hannibal had used to annihilate Rome at Cannae. Scipio just hadn’t turned it on Hannibal yet.

By the time he returned to Rome, he wasn’t guessing at how Hannibal thought.

He knew in his bones.

Then the Senate sent him for a rematch.

Not in Italy, where Hannibal still had an army in the field. Scipio loaded roughly 400 transport ships, escorted by 40 warships, and sailed the whole fleet across the Mediterranean to North Africa instead.

Roughly 30,000 men crossed with him, some of them Cannae survivors looking to redeem the defeat they’d walked away from years earlier.

The move forced Hannibal to flee Italy and defend home turf.

Fabius Maximus called the plan reckless.

Pulling troops out of Italy while Hannibal still had an army on Roman soil looked like a gamble Rome couldn’t survive twice.

Scipio got his invasion anyway, threatening to bypass the Senate and put it to the people directly. He sailed with volunteers only: no extra soldiers, no extra money.

It worked.

Student Outmaneuvers Teacher at Zama

Hannibal’s opening move was one that never failed him: 80 war elephants sent charging straight at the Roman line to shatter it before any fighting started.

Scipio was ready.

Roman legions normally fought in a checkerboard: three lines of small units called maniples, staggered so no gap ran straight through the whole formation...a potent defense against exactly the kind of frontal charge that could break a line in one blow.

Scipio broke his own doctrine.

He lined up those gaps front to back instead of staggering them, opening straight corridors through the entire Roman formation. Plenty wide enough for a panicked elephant to run straight through without injuring a single man.

Then Scipio’s cavalry, reinforced by fierce Numidian horsemen who had defected from Carthage, shattered Hannibal’s cavalry and chased it off the battlefield.

That ended the advantage either army had for the moment. Next came a brutal infantry fight: man against man, for hours.

Then Scipio’s cavalry charged back onto the field. They slammed into Hannibal’s army from behind.

It was the same double envelopment Hannibal himself had used to crush Rome at Cannae fourteen years earlier, now turned back on the man who had invented it.

Hannibal’s army was surrounded on every side. It broke. Carthage suffered 20,000 dead.

Rome gave him a new name for it: Scipio Africanus. Conqueror of Africa, at 33 years old.

No Roman had ever earned a title like that from a single battle.

The Ring Hannibal Always Carried

Hannibal survived Zama. He didn’t survive what came after.

You’ve probably kept something around “just in case,” insurance, an exit plan, a number you never called. Hannibal kept his for years too, a dose of poison hidden in his ring, waiting for the day he’d need it.

Rome hunted him for nineteen years, through three foreign courts, until a king finally agreed to hand him over. Hannibal opened the ring instead. He died at Libyssa in 183 BC.

Carthage paid for Zama in full. Ten ships left of its navy, and an indemnity of 10,000 silver talents due over the next fifty years, roughly half a billion dollars in raw silver at today’s prices.

The Battle Move That Lives On Today

Ever met a former adversary years later? It happened in 193 BC to Scipio and Hannibal.

Years after Zama, in the city of Ephesus, Scipio and Hannibal met face to face. Two men in their forties, on opposite sides of a war neither controlled anymore.

Scipio asked him a question: who did Hannibal consider the greatest general who ever lived?

Hannibal named Alexander first. Pyrrhus second. Himself, third.

Scipio, half-joking, asked what Hannibal would have said if he’d actually won at Zama.

Hannibal’s answer: then he’d have ranked himself above all of them.

He never ranked Scipio at all. He didn’t have to.

Every double-envelopment that’s broken an army since is still called a Cannae, named for the battle where Hannibal invented it.

Scipio is the reason it also belongs to Zama, the day the student turned the teacher’s own move back on him and won.

How the hell did elephants get into the Alps?

The logistics are mind-boggling.

Hannibal looked at the tallest, most brutal mountain range in Europe and decided, in 218 BC, I’m marching 37 African elephants in snow at nearly 10,000 feet.

Nobody knows why. But we can guess.

Polybius and Livy, the two ancient historians who wrote the most detailed accounts of the campaign, never record Hannibal explaining himself.

The leading theory: shock and terror. Elephants panicked horses and soldiers who’d never seen one, and there’s compelling evidence for that from his later battles in Italy.

Some historians think it was also about appearances, a way to impress tribes in northern Italy who’d never seen anything like it before. Pick a side. One of them has giant animals.

Hannibal never wrote his reasoning down, and neither did anyone who asked him.

Researchers from Oxford and Germany don’t know why either.

But they discovered which mountain pass he used by studying elephants that are alive right now, in Kenya.

The Answer Hid in Kenya

218 BC.

Nobody knew for 2,200 years which pass got Hannibal's army over the Alps, the opening move of the Second Punic War and his one shot at Rome.

Three real candidates, argued over by classicists for generations.

The Col de Montgenèvre: the easiest and lowest, roughly 6,100 feet.

The Col du Clapier: 8,127 feet.

The Col de la Traversette: brutal, nearly 9,700 feet, one of the highest usable passes in the entire range.

In July 2026, a team from the University of Oxford and two German research institutions published an answer in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Their method was to borrow the math used to track living elephants today.

Researchers used a model called ENERSCAPE, originally built to track how modern African elephants move across real terrain.

It calculates exactly how much energy a body that size burns on a given slope, at a given elevation, in a given kind of snow.

They ran Hannibal’s entire army through it, men, horses, and all 37 elephants, across every candidate pass.

The Traversette route won.

Not because it was gentler. Because it was shorter, and shorter, even at nearly 9,700 feet, cost less energy overall than a longer, lower path.

The food calculations alone are staggering. Feeding the men through the crossing required an estimated 232 tons of grain, hauled up a mountain by hand, alongside soldiers who could barely feed themselves.

The elephants needed five to six hours of feeding a day just to survive….animals the size of a small truck, scraping vegetation out of the snow.

The Mountains Killed Half His Men

Hannibal marched out of Carthago Nova, the Carthaginian capital in Spain, army in tow: 38,000 infantry, 8,000 cavalry, 37 elephants.

They were forest elephants from North Africa, smaller and darker than the ones you’re picturing. Wool cloaks over bronze-studded leather, most of his men Iberian and Gallic mercenaries who’d never seen snow in their lives.

Hannibal marched out of Carthago Nova, the Carthaginian capital in Spain, army in tow: 38,000 infantry, 8,000 cavalry, 37 elephants. His target was Rome itself.

Rome controlled the sea. A direct crossing by ship was out.

So Hannibal chose the only other way in: over the Alps, and straight down into Roman territory from the north, where nobody expected an army to come from.

Which route he actually took stayed unsettled for two thousand years... until the answer turned up walking around Kenya today.

Ancient sources don’t agree on how long the crossing took; Polybius says 15 days, other traditions say more like 19.

By day nine, according to Polybius, the army had reached the highest point of the route, exhausted and ready to quit.

Hannibal rode to the front, stopped the column, and pointed down into Italy, and declared:

He was wrong.

Livy records four straight days where the pack animals had nothing to eat, the ground buried under old snow that had never fully melted from the previous winter.

Men chewed whatever grain rations they had left, cold and half-frozen, sleeping wherever the path was wide enough to lie down.

Local mountain tribes weren’t helpful.

They rolled boulders down onto the column from above, picking off stragglers on the narrowest stretches. One wrong step meant a soldier, a horse, or an elephant went straight off the edge.

By the time Hannibal reached the other side, he stood in the upper Po Valley, in the territory of the Insubres, one of the Gallic tribes he was counting on to help him fight Rome.

Nearly half his army, gone, to cold, to disease, to boulders rolled down from above, to falls off cliffs that never gave anyone a second chance. The mountains took them, not the Romans.

The Elephants Were Fine. The Men Weren’t.

Picture the crossing, and you probably think about the elephants. Stumbling, terrified, dying in the snow. That’s the image every painting and film has sold you for centuries.

Not what happened.

Researchers estimate the elephants lost only about 4% of their body fat reserves making the crossing. Horses lost 11%. The soldiers, the ones everyone assumes fared best, lost 19%, nearly a fifth of their body fat, in fifteen days.

These aren’t measurements. They’re modeled estimates, built from data on living African elephants and extrapolated backward across 2,200 years and an extinct subspecies. The best guess anyone’s had yet, not a fact carved in stone.

The men took the real damage. Cold, starving, sleeping on exposed rock with nothing but wool and leather between them and the frost.

Nearly half of Hannibal’s human army never made it to the other side. Most of his elephants did.

What Survived the Alps Didn’t Survive Winter

Two months after the crossing, in December 218 BC, Hannibal fought his first battle on Italian soil, at the Trebia River.

He still had his elephants.

At Trebia, the sight of them shattered the Roman line before it ever fully formed. Hannibal won decisively.

It was the winter that followed, not the battle, that finally killed them. By spring, all but one had died, frozen out by a cold snap nobody saw coming.

The single survivor, an Indian elephant named Surus, later carried Hannibal himself across the swamps of Etruria on the way to his next battle.

Hannibal Survived the Alps. He Didn’t Survive Scipio.

Nobody at Trebia knew what they were looking at. Rome had never fought an army with elephants on Italian soil.

It showed.

Hannibal built on that shock at Lake Trasimene the following June, then kept fighting in Italy for over a decade.

By the time Rome finally cornered him, he was back in North Africa, defending Carthage itself, at Zama.

He had 80 fresh elephants. Rome had a young general who’d studied every mistake made against him the first time.

Zama is where Hannibal finally lost. Not to a mountain. Not to the cold. To Roman general Scipio, who did his homework on Cannae.

Making AI Sound Like Me, Part II

I continue to draft with Claude. I still struggle with getting it to sound like a real human, me.

I have long voice prompts meant to mimic me. They don’t work great.

As I write more history articles, I’m settling into my natural style, well-grounded in history with a casual, punchy voice built for easy reading.

My next plan is to feed Claude several of my latest essays and tell it to copy how I write. I’ll let you know how it turns out. If it works, it might save me at least an hour of editing.

Every fact in this article was checked against actual sources before it went out, not left as whatever the first draft assumed.

Homer’s Odyssey runs on bronze.

Men fight with bronze, wear bronze, die by bronze.

Then Homer mentions iron in Book 19.

Wait a second.

Odysseus and Telemachus quietly remove the weapons from the great hall before the suitors’ feast turns violent.

Homer puts these words in Odysseus’s mouth in Book 19:

Iron wasn’t held by everyday Greek warriors until around 1050 BC, roughly a century after the world Odysseus supposedly lived in. For one line, Homer lets his own century leak into the tale.

Few people notice.

Christopher Nolan’s armor gets far more scrutiny.

Nolan Could Ask a Metallurgist. Homer Couldn’t.

Some jeer at Odysseus's gear looking like iron, not the bronze his world was built on around 1200 BC.

Nolan changed the armor for drama, not accuracy. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick chose a blackened bronze finish on Agamemnon to do an old job: mark him as untouchable.

Real Bronze Age elites signaled rank through materials that showed status, expensive ones most people couldn’t get their hands on.

Nolan answered his critics with metallurgy.

Real daggers from Mycenaean Greece, the Bronze Age civilization the Odyssey is set in, do exist with a blackened finish.

His theory is that Mycenaean smiths could have produced it by adding gold and silver to bronze, then treating the surface with sulfur.

The choice was made for effect. The archaeological evidence happened to back it up.

The Out-of-Place Iron

Picture the Book 19 scene.

Odysseus is home disguised as a beggar. Nobody else in the room knows what bloodshed is coming. He tells his son they need to move the armor before the suitors’ wine turns their feast into a brawl.

Helmets and bossed shields, spears still sharp after twenty years hanging untouched, all of it darkening with smoke in that hall since Odysseus sailed for Troy.

Father and son carry the armor away together, by lamplight. Telemachus was an infant when that armor last left the wall.

This is the first time father and son have ever done anything together as men. What they’re holding doesn’t belong in Odysseus’s century.

This is the scene where Homer’s line about iron slips in: “Iron itself draws a man towards it.”

It’s a proverb. E.V. Rieu’s translation renders it as “the very presence of a weapon provokes a man to use it,” the Bronze Age equivalent of “cold steel” or “there’s a gun in the drawer.”

Bronze belonged to Odysseus. Iron belonged to Homer’s audience. By the time he was composing, iron was what his audience knew.

The hall itself, lines earlier, is still hung with weapons of gleaming bronze. For one line, eighth-century Greece breaks through the Bronze Age world Homer built.

Homer was doing what any storyteller does: reaching for the word that affects the people listening, even if it didn’t belong to the world he was describing. Homer took the same liberty in 750 BC that filmmakers take in 2026.

Homer Got More Than the Metal Wrong

Homer’s world isn’t inside one century. Some of it echoes Mycenae’s palace culture: massive walls, boar hunts, bronze.

The real Bronze Age palaces this world was modeled on ran on bureaucracy: scribes tracking grain, wool, and bronze allocations on clay tablets.

Historian Moses Finley pointed out decades ago that almost none of that appears anywhere in the Odyssey.

We see no throne rooms running grain accounts, no administrative machinery at all, in a poem set inside the exact civilization that invented it.

Much of the social texture Homer describes matches the Greek Dark Ages. That’s three or four centuries after Troy would have fallen, not the world Homer says he’s showing you.

Homer was preserving a story passed mouth to mouth for four hundred years before anyone wrote it down, built out of fragments from two different eras and stitched together by ear.

Three thousand years later, we’re still arguing over what Odysseus should be wearing.

George Chapman translated the poem in 1614. Alexander Pope followed in 1725. Now Homer’s name is back on an IMAX screen, in front of millions who’ve never opened Fagles or Wilson.

A costume that gets one detail wrong is still a costume designed by someone who researched blackened bronze daggers to get another detail right.

Nolan gets picked apart for a costume choice. Homer got away with rewriting his hero’s whole world, and it made him immortal.

Apparently artistic liberty is only a problem if you’re still alive to answer for it.

Editing AI To Sound Like You

I use Claude to build my first drafts. It’s not a final draft; it’s more like a fleshed-out outline. It gets the story structure clear in my head: what beat goes where, what the argument is, and what facts I have and which I still need.

But the writing itself doesn’t sound like me. Not close. I spend at least two hours editing every piece after that first draft, cutting lines, rewriting sentences from scratch, killing anything that reads as if it came from a machine instead of a person.

The more I’ve done this, the more sensitive I’ve gotten to it. I catch AI patterns now that I would have missed a few months ago: the flat rhythm, the phrases that sound smart but say nothing, the sentences that explain a point I already made.

That’s not a downside. It means the editing has to be meticulous. Every piece has to get made to sound like me, and I take as long as I need, even if I need to delay publishing a day.

Every fact in this article was checked against actual historical sources before it went out.

Cannae. August 2, 216 BC.

One of the bloodiest afternoons in ancient military history, fought on a flat, sunbaked plain in southern Italy.

By nightfall, up to 70,000 people were dead.*

Did they have machine guns? How?

Gunpowder wouldn’t exist for another thousand years. Men in those days killed with iron, shields, and horses, packed together so tightly most could barely lift a sword.

Rome brought roughly 80,000 soldiers onto that plain. Hannibal gave them exactly what they thought they wanted.

His weakest infantry, Gauls and Spaniards, held the center and bowed backward as the Romans surged forward, convinced they’d shattered the line.

They hadn’t.

Hannibal’s African veterans waited untouched on both flanks, while his cavalry was already circling behind the Roman rear. By the time anyone realized the retreat was bait, they were standing inside a ring of Carthaginian steel.

Carthaginians, Gauls, Spaniards, and Numidian cavalry did the killing, Hannibal’s whole multiethnic army closing in at once.

But Hannibal's masterpiece isn't the only reason this battle is still discussed. What Rome did after losing that many men is.

A 20-Year Grudge Match Explodes

This was round two. Rome and Carthage had already fought once, in the First Punic War.

Rome won, then pushed its luck, taking Sardinia and Corsica on top of the peace terms while Carthage was busy crushing a mercenary revolt at home.

Carthage's answer was Spain, a source of silver and soldiers Rome couldn't touch.

In 237 BC, Hamilcar Barca sailed from Gades (modern Cádiz) with his army and his nine-year-old son Hannibal. He carved out new territory along the silver-rich Guadalquivir valley and built a new capital, New Carthage

By the time his son-in-law Hasdrubal took over, the operation was fielding 50,000 infantry and a corps of 100 elephants, paid for by that silver and loyal to the Barcid family personally, not the government back in Carthage.

The match was lit in 219 BC.

Hannibal laid siege to a Roman-allied town called Saguntum. Eight months. Rome demanded he be handed over for punishment. Carthage said no.

Hannibal’s answer was insane even by the standards of ancient warfare.

He marched 90,000 infantry, 12,000 cavalry, and 37 elephants out of New Carthage, up through Spain and Gaul, and over the Alps into Italy itself.

By the time he reached the Po Valley, more than 30,000 of his men were gone, lost to cold, disease, and hostile mountain tribes before he’d clashed with a single Roman soldier.

Flat Ground, No Escape

The Cannae battlefield sits on a low hill, barely 42 meters of elevation, overlooking the Ofanto River in Puglia, about 10 kilometers south of the modern city of Barletta. The Ofanto is the ancient Aufidus, the same river the armies fought beside.

This was the Tavoliere delle Puglie, Rome’s grain basket: flat, open farmland, nowhere to disperse, nothing to break a formation.

Hannibal had already taken the ground closest to the water before the fighting started. The larger Roman army was parched before it ever drew a sword.

Hannibal Springs the Trap

August 2, 216 BC

Hannibal placed his weaker Gallic and Spanish infantry in the center and kept his elite African veterans waiting on the flanks. He let the center sag backward under the Roman advance, a controlled retreat, not a collapse.

The Romans, stacked 35 to 50 ranks deep on Consul Varro’s own orders, smelled a breakthrough and pushed forward into the sagging middle.

That’s when Hannibal snapped the trap shut.

The African infantry pivoted inward on both flanks. Hasdrubal’s cavalry, having already routed the Roman horse, swung around and hit the rear.

Three sides shut at once, in minutes. A death trap.

Military strategists still call this tactic “a Cannae.” German planners built the Schlieffen Plan around achieving one. The tactic that trapped and destroyed a Russian army at Tannenberg in 1914 carried the same name, two thousand years later.

No Gunpowder. 100 Dead Every Minute.

How do 70,000 men die in a single afternoon, more than a thousand years before gunpowder?

Once Hannibal’s trap closed, the battle stopped resembling combat and became a human crush. Men were packed together so tightly they couldn’t raise a sword or turn to run.

Ancient accounts describe bodies left standing upright, held in place by the press of the living still pushing and dying around them.

Death came from heat, thirst, exhaustion, and suffocation as much as from iron. A hot wind, identified by some ancient writers as the Vulturnus, blew dust into Roman faces for hours, blinding them as the circle tightened.

Some soldiers, unable to fight and unable to escape, dug shallow holes with their hands and buried their faces in the earth, choosing a quicker death over the slow crush around them.

Consul Lucius Aemilius Paullus, already wounded, refused to abandon his men. He died where he stood with them.

In the days after, Rome learned it had lost roughly 80 senators, a huge share of its entire governing class, along with countless fathers, sons, uncles, and cousins from families rich and poor alike.

By modern estimates, more than one hundred Roman soldiers died every minute for hours. That slaughter rivals the bloodiest days of the Somme and Verdun, achieved entirely with iron, sweat, and human bodies.

A Teenaged Future General Draws His Sword

The survivors drifted south to the nearby town of Canusium. Among them was a young officer, barely out of his teens, named Publius Cornelius Scipio.

There he discovered a group of Roman noblemen quietly planning to abandon Italy and enter the service of a foreign king. Scipio drew his sword, blocked the doorway, and forced them to swear an oath that they would never desert the Republic.

Fourteen years later, he would defeat Hannibal at Zama.

Thanked for Not Giving Up

Consul Gaius Terentius Varro, the man who had insisted on fighting at Cannae, escaped with roughly seventy horsemen, gathered what survivors he could at Canusium, and rode back to Rome expecting disgrace.

It never came.

Crowds cheered him at the city gates. The Senate rode out to meet him and formally thanked him in five Latin words: quod de re publica non desperasset, “for not having despaired of the Republic.”

Not for winning. For refusing to quit.

Rome went further. The Senate banned public mourning, ordering the city’s women to grieve for thirty days and then stop. The city was still counting its dead. It refused to let despair become its public face.

No one standing at those gates had a name for what they were honoring. Stoicism, the philosophy built around mastering your response when everything else has slipped beyond your control, wouldn’t exist for another two hundred years. The word came later. The behavior came first.

Thanking the man after losing that many people in an afternoon is not nothing.

Most of us have a version of what happened that chaotic day at Cannae. The work project that collapsed. The diagnosis. The year everything you built caved in on three sides at once. Rome had every reason to call itself finished, and thanked the man who refused to submit.

Varro’s tactical mistakes have filled military textbooks for more than two thousand years. History remembers him anyway for riding home to face the Senate, bracing for disgrace, and getting cheered instead.

Rome Rose From Defeat

Hannibal’s own cavalry commander, Maharbal, begged him to march on Rome immediately. The city was days away and nearly undefended. Hannibal refused, choosing to consolidate in the south instead.

Maharbal’s reported reply, according to Livy:

The man who’d just inflicted the worst defeat in Western military history for the next 1,600 years still couldn’t make Rome quit. That part was never his to control.

The war ran fourteen more years. Rome came back from Cannae.

Rome raised new legions from freed slaves and boys too young for normal service, because the regular pool was gone. It refused to ransom Hannibal’s prisoners, a hard, deliberate signal that Rome would not submit.

Hannibal spent over a decade undefeated in the field in Italy and still never broke Rome’s will. His own government back home starved him of reinforcements the whole time.

In 202 BC, the same young officer who’d drawn his sword at Canusium, grown into a general now, beat Hannibal at Zama, on Carthage’s own soil. Carthage lost its navy, its overseas territory, and became a tribute-paying client state.

Cannae was Hannibal’s ceiling. It was Rome’s floor.

The worst single day either side inflicted or absorbed decided nothing by itself. What decided it was fourteen years of a city that had every reason to consider itself finished, and refused to.

Rome went on to rule the Mediterranean for another six centuries after that afternoon, enough time to give the world Roman law, Roman roads, and a language that still shapes half the words you’re reading right now.

None of it happens without a beaten consul riding home to a city that chose thanks instead of exile.

*Editor’s Note: Ancient sources disagree on exactly how many died at Cannae. Polybius, the source for the 70,000 figure used above, wrote his account decades after the battle.

Livy's estimate is lower, closer to 48,000. Even at the more conservative figure, it remains the deadliest single day in Roman military history. It is worth knowing the sources conflict, since ancient casualty counts are estimates, not census data.

Ceuta is a Spanish city on a spit of Moroccan coastline, sitting where the Mediterranean narrows into the Strait of Gibraltar. Media covering this week's crossing has reached for the same word: unprecedented.

Nearly 60,000 people swam and swarmed from Morocco into Ceuta in a matter of hours last week, according to Ceuta’s own president.

Spain mobilized its army. More than 25,000 people were sent back to Morocco within a day. At least 67 tragically drowned in the crossing.

Italy suspended Schengen free movement with Spain entirely, shutting its air and sea borders for the month of August.

Every generation thinks it’s witnessing the first migration crisis.

Almost every generation is wrong.

Spain’s border crisis is the newest in an ancient argument:

Protect what’s yours, or decide who else gets a share of it, and when. Every civilization with a border has had to answer that question, and the world didn’t end when they did.

Rome divided its law between ius civile for citizens and ius gentium for everyone else.

The Strait of Gibraltar has forced that same decision since before Rome existed.

Is Ceuta unprecedented? Three thousand years of history say otherwise.

Assyria Transplanted Whole Nations By Royal Order

Ninth-century BC Assyrian kings didn’t wait for migrants to walk in over the Syrian desert. They marched them by force.

Shalmaneser III boasted of deporting more than 167,000 people from conquered territory in a single reign. This was his standard practice for shattering resistance by scattering populations and refilling emptied land with someone else’s labor.

Assyria considered conquered people raw material. Assyrian reliefs from Nineveh show these convoys riding ox-carts piled with bundles, children and livestock alongside them, under armed escort.

Today we debate whether migrants are a labor shortage or a burden. Whichever side of that argument you buy, Shalmaneser settled it 2,800 years ago.

There was no debate in Nineveh about it. The king decided, and scribes wrote it down as state policy.

Egypt did the opposite, centuries earlier. The Hyksos arrived as settlers in the Nile Delta around the 17th century BC. They rose to political power from inside the country they’d entered.

Egypt eventually recovered the strength to reclaim control of who belonged, and expelled them around 1550 BC.

That’s three thousand years before anyone called it “great replacement” anxiety.

Leviticus Had Border Law First

The Hebrew Bible contains one of the most detailed legal codes on resident foreigners anywhere in the ancient world, set down well over two thousand years ago, and it reads like case law.

Don’t oppress the ger, the sojourner living among you. Judge him by the same standard as a citizen. Let him glean the fields. Remember that you were foreigners in Egypt once.

It wasn’t unconditional. Full political standing stayed out of reach, and a ger couldn’t own land the way a native Israelite could.

But he rested on the Sabbath like everyone else, kept the dietary laws, and stayed clear of idolatry. In return, he got the same courts as any citizen, plus the right to glean the harvest and protection against fraud.

Athens Taxed. Sparta Expelled.

Centuries before Rome ever debated the question, Athens and Sparta had already run two opposite experiments in the same city-state world.

By the 5th century BC, Athens ran on metics, resident foreigners who paid a special tax, fought its wars, and built much of its trade economy. They never became citizens.

Sparta, in the same era, opted the other way with xenelasia, periodically expelling foreigners to protect a closed military culture it considered too fragile to dilute.

Neither city was wrong. Athens traded rights for labor. Sparta traded growth for control.

That same tension runs through every emergency cabinet meeting in Madrid this week: open the gates for the labor and trade outsiders bring, or close them to protect the cohesion already inside.

Whichever side you pick, Athens or Sparta already tried it for you.

Rome Enlisted Migrants As Its Army

Rome answered the “who, and when” question two different ways, four centuries apart, and lived through the consequences of both.

The successful version gives us an ancient transcript. In 48 CE, Emperor Claudius stood before a reluctant Senate to argue that Gallic nobles should be allowed to hold office in Rome, and made his case with a history lesson.

Rome’s own founder, Romulus, turned conquered enemies into fellow citizens the same day he defeated them, he said, and immigrants had already ruled in Rome more than once.

Then came the line that should be remembered somewhere in Madrid this week: Sparta and Athens fell because they kept treating the conquered as permanent aliens instead of absorbing them.

The Senate changed its vote.

Citizenship kept expanding until it covered nearly every free man in the empire by 212 CE.

The catastrophe arrived on the doorstep in 376 CE, when Rome let large groups of Goths cross the Danube as allied foederati, refugees turned into a buffer army, given land in exchange for troops.

Smaller groups of foederati had settled this way before without incident.

This time, Roman officials running the resettlement extorted the Goths for food, at one point charging them dog meat at outrageous prices until families sold their own children into slavery to cover the difference.

Fritigern, the Gothic leader who’d led his people across the Danube in good faith, watched it happen before he gave the order to fight.

Two years later, in 378 CE, the Goths crushed a Roman army at Adrianople and killed an emperor.

Not the foreigners, but the graft of the officials managing them, brought down that army and nearly an empire.

Rome did this experiment twice. One ending built an empire. The other led to its fall.

Ceuta Was Never a Wall

Thousands swimming the breakwater at Ceuta this week isn’t new. The Phoenicians established a foothold there by the 7th century BC. Carthage inherited it by the 6th. Rome folded it into the province of Mauretania Tingitana in the 1st century CE.

Vandals took it in the 5th century, Byzantines reclaimed it in the 6th, and Arab dynasties held it from the 8th century onward. Each one arrived from the same direction the current crossings are coming from.

The sea itself has never been a hard line between two separate worlds. For more than 2,500 years, whoever controlled the Strait controlled who crossed it.

That control changed hands again and again.

Spain’s Turn to Answer

Protect the homeland. Decide who gets in, and when.

Every civilization on a migration route has had to answer these questions, usually while standing on the ruins of the last civilization that responded differently.

For the people arriving in Ceuta last week, the journey is new. The question waiting for them is ancient.

Assyria answered it with deportation. Egypt with expulsion. Israel with law. Athens with taxation. Sparta with exclusion. Rome tried both expansion and restriction.

Spain will answer it in its own way.

Whether that answer succeeds or fails, it won’t be unprecedented.

How to Un-AI Your Writing and Sound Like You

I use AI for my first drafts, but I spend 3-4 hours on subsequent drafts. Much of that time is removing AI constructions and making the content sound like yours truly.

Three AI constructions to watch for in your writing are:

Negation-parallelism: “It’s not just a tool. It’s a movement.” Two abstractions dressed up as insight, saying nothing concrete. Fix: pick one claim and state it directly.

Vague authority: “Experts argue that...” with no name attached. It borrows credibility from nowhere. Fix: name the source, or drop the claim.

Dead metaphor flogging: the “journey” metaphor reused five times in one piece. This is a big one that Claude loves to use, no matter how often I correct it. Fix: use it once, then describe the thing plainly.

It’s the same underlying problem as the last three: each of these lets the writer sound like they said something while actually saying nothing checkable.

A reader can’t act on “the result? overwhelming,” but they can act on “sign-ups tripled in a week.” Specificity is what makes writing worth reading twice, and every one of these constructions is a workaround for not having a specific claim to make.

400 BC.

Thousands filled the stone seats of the theater at Epidaurus, Greece, under a clear summer sky, the limestone worn smooth by generations. The audience leaned forward as the rhapsode in a blue-dyed cloak climbed the platform and began reciting the Odyssey.

They were words much of the crowd already knew by heart.

Voices murmured lines before he reached them. Odysseus lashed himself to the mast against the Sirens’ song, twenty years’ journey from Ithaca. His voice carried effortlessly to the back row. The theater had been built for moments like this.

In Plato’s dialogue Ion, the rhapsode describes looking down mid-performance to see thousands of faces streaming with tears, caught in the same fear his voice was describing.

Twenty-four hundred years later, the seats are full again. Nolan’s Odyssey has surged past $700 million in twelve days, tracking toward a billion with China still to open.

A single thread runs from a fire circle to a clay tablet, from a stone amphitheater to a mead-hall, and from there to an IMAX seat tonight. And the thread is us.

Crimson for War. Blue for the Sea.

That scene at Epidaurus isn't invented. Plato's Ion opens with the rhapsode Ion arriving in Athens fresh off a win at Epidaurus's own festival of Asclepius, where he'd just been crowned the best rhapsode in the competition, reciting Homer.

Socrates, curious what that actually feels like, starts asking questions.

The real force behind Homer’s survival was the Panathenaea, Athens’s great religious festival. Every four years the city filled with processions, sacrifices to Athena, athletic contests, and days of musical competition. Rhapsodes competed with one another.

By law, reportedly introduced under the tyrant Hipparchus in the sixth century BC, each performer had to pick up exactly where the previous one stopped.

Together they recited the Iliad and the Odyssey from beginning to end without skipping or repeating a line.

They were clothed in elaborate robes and gold crowns, colors tied to the material: crimson for the bloodshed of the Iliad, blue for the sea-wandering of the Odyssey.

Plato’s Ion, written about 380 BC, captures what those performances did to a body. Socrates presses the rhapsode on whether he remains in his right mind while performing, and Ion admits he doesn’t:

“When I speak of pity, my eyes fill with tears; when I speak of what is fearful and awful, my hair stands on end for terror, and my heart leaps.”

Socrates asks: does it make sense for a grown man in fine robes and a golden crown to stand before twenty thousand friendly people and tremble as though danger were real?

Ion doesn’t argue. He says he can see the same thing happening in the crowd below him: faces turned upward, tears, fear, twenty thousand people living inside the story right alongside him.

Strip away the Cyclops, the gods, and the sea, and it’s a man trying to get home to people who’ve been waiting twenty years for him.

It is a story that needed no translation in 400 BC, and needs none tonight.

Augustus’s Sister Fainted at a Book Reading

Three centuries later, Rome produced something new: an epic with one named author writing alone at a desk, instead of a story shaped across generations of oral performance.

Virgil composed the Aeneid under Augustus, consciously building on Homer rather than descending from him. Yet even a written epic still needed an audience.

The ancient biographer Aelius Donatus records Virgil reading Book 6 aloud to Augustus’s own family.

He reached the line “tu Marcellus eris,” you will be Marcellus, and Augustus’s sister Octavia, whose son had died young and shared that name, is said to have fainted on the spot. She was revived only with difficulty, and reportedly rewarded Virgil with ten thousand sesterces for every line in the passage.

Aeneas leaves the woman he loves to found a nation instead.

We think we invented the conflict between love and duty. Virgil buried a queen over it two thousand years ago.

He Might Not Live to Hear the Ending

Move north and centuries forward, and the venue changes again.

Beowulf was composed for performance in the mead-hall, a scop with a harp, reciting for warriors who would fight the following morning and might never hear how the story ended.

Only later did monks commit it to vellum, preserving something that had already survived generations without a single written word.

Every culture invents its own Grendel: something in the dark nobody wants to face alone. Every culture also produces someone willing to go first.

The Idea Outlasted Troy, Gotham, and Deep Space

In 2004, Christopher Nolan was in talks to direct Troy, based on the Iliad. The deal fell through. He carried the idea for years through Gotham, deep space, and Los Alamos before finally returning to Homer.

His Odyssey has already sold hundreds of millions of dollars in tickets in less than two weeks. China is still waiting for opening night, not because the marketing worked, but because the story being sold is the oldest one there is.

Before there were books, there was firelight. Before there were theaters, there was a circle of people waiting for someone to begin.

We still are.

Reconciling AI Contradictions During Editing

I draft and outline my essays with Claude, then edit heavily. Once a draft is close, I run it through ChatGPT for a final pass.

Many writers prefer Claude for long-form writing, and I do too, but ChatGPT has a well-known strength: it’s less wordy, and it’s good at compressing a paragraph into one line that sticks in one’s memory.

That’s the editing pass I use it for. The history is mine, the research is mine, the essay structure is mine, but the final “mic drop” line in a few of these sections is helped by ChatGPT.

X is fighting about a 2,700-year-old Greek word this week: polytropos, Homer’s first description of Odysseus. It means something like “of many turns,” and no modern word matches it exactly.

Most of the people fighting about it don’t know they’re not the first.

Christopher Nolan built his Odysseus around one translator’s answer to that word. Emily Wilson translated polytropos as “complicated,” in the line “Tell me about a complicated man.” Half of X thinks it ruins the poem.

Robert Fagles answered the same word differently, years before Wilson: “the man of twists and turns,” in the line “Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns.”

Alexander Pope, three centuries before either of them, answered with “the man for wisdom’s various arts renown’d.”

Is “complicated” an honest read on a Bronze Age hero clawing his way home from war, or a word that leans too hard on the century that coined it?

Nolan’s Odysseus was built on a word that may mean the opposite of what he thinks. “Complicated” means an inner life full of contradiction. Polytropos meant what a man could do: talk his way past monsters, lie without hesitation.

Pope, Fagles, and Wilson were never having separate arguments. It was the same dispute, replayed for four centuries, over whether Odysseus is a man of action or a man of contradiction.

Pope Made a Fortune. One Scholar Wasn't Buying It.

Alexander Pope published his Odyssey in 1725 after spending sixteen years studying Homer’s Greek. His answer to polytropos made him a rich man, enough to retire on the proceeds alone. Samuel Johnson later called it the noblest version of poetry the world had ever seen.

But the classical scholar Richard Bentley delivered a verdict that still gets quoted three hundred years later: “It is a pretty poem, Mr. Pope, but you must not call it Homer.”

Too polished, the complaint said, too elegant for a poem about a man barely surviving his way home to Ithaca.

Swap that complaint onto Wilson, and it’s the same one flooding X this week.

He Praised Her Translation. She Panned His Movie.

Christopher Nolan didn’t just borrow one line from Emily Wilson’s translation. He credited her whole book as an influence throughout his press tour, and told Empire that her opening line was the guide he used to build his Odysseus.

Wilson’s reply was direct. Writing in the London Review of Books, she said she would be ashamed to have written any part of Nolan’s script. She called his Odysseus thin and one-note, missing the calculating, contradictory man her own translation spent years trying to earn.

Imagine building a film on one woman’s book, only to have her publicly call the result abysmal.

Wilson’s Initiation Into a 400-Year-Old Argument

Pope chose grandeur. Fagles chose fluency, a phrase built to move fast and sound heroic. Wilson chose plainness, stripping the epithet down to a single blunt adjective. All three chose wrong, according to someone or other.

Pope got nailed for being too rhymed, Fagles for being too readable, Wilson for sounding too much like a modern diagnosis instead of an ancient epithet.

Wilson later said the same thing about Nolan's film: grandiose and superficial, a man in motion, with nothing underneath explaining why he moves.

This isn’t four separate disputes. It’s one long argument that never resolves, because the word itself refuses to resolve. Every generation picks the version of that contradiction it thinks is reality, then argues about whether the next generation got it right.

Every story we have loved eventually gets a version you don’t recognize. You decide, usually within minutes, whether it has earned the name of its predecessor.

Every “Ruined” Version Sent People Back to Homer

Wilson’s own review still concedes something to the film. She notes that Nolan studied English at University College London, where the Odyssey is still taught as a first-year foundational text, and says his film might persuade a few college administrators not to cut their literature departments after all.

That’s a bigger concession than it looks. It’s the same thing every “ruinous” translation has actually done. Pope’s readers, whatever they thought of his rhymes, went looking for the Greek underneath it.

US sales of the Odyssey are up 76 percent since the start of the year, according to Circana BookScan, the same publishing-industry tracker that logs bestseller data.

Fagles sold more than a million copies to people who had never opened Homer before and might never have otherwise. A three-hour, two-hundred-fifty-million-dollar action movie is now doing, for a much larger audience, exactly what a controversial 1725 translation did for its own.

The word has been argued over for four hundred years. The poem endures, and has encouraged another generation to read it.

Every generation gets handed this poem and decides for itself what kind of man Odysseus is. Chapman decided. Pope decided. Fagles, Wilson, and now forty million moviegoers are deciding too. That’s not the poem falling apart. That’s the poem still working, four hundred years and counting.

Substack and Its AI Detector

Substack launched an AI detector. Some say Substack writers are sweating.

I couldn’t care less.

Most good Substack writers use AI in one way or another. I know multiple six-figure Substacks that use AI for research and drafting. AI speeds up and improves these essential parts of the writing process.

But the rough draft is just that, rough. Claude’s initial draft of my essay sounds nothing like me. I must edit Claude’s output for at least two hours before I’m satisfied with the result.

I don’t care if an AI detector says my draft is “AI polished” or “AI drafted.” Yeah, so what? I’m up front about it. But the end product can’t be replicated by a machine because a machine isn’t me.

If you use AI to draft your essays, it’s fine. Just spend sufficient time with your draft to make the document sound like you. Insert details and stories, delete pat, annoying AI words and phrasing (land, sit with, anyone?). Then it doesn’t matter what any AI detector says. The end product is yours.

A billboard flashed past my car window on I-30 in Arkansas, still 700 miles from my hometown in Ohio: PHONE ADDICTION? THERE’S HELP. A 1-800 number underneath in two-foot-high print, like a drug abuse hotline.

The addiction’s real. Reviews.org found Americans check their phones 186 times a day, once every five minutes they’re awake.

You know the routine: a negative news headline blares on the rectangle in your hand, and you're upset before you've even registered what happened.

The reaction is a distinct step, and it happens so fast it seems automatic.

It’s not.

A Roman emperor spent fourteen years on the Danube frontier learning to slow the reaction step down, two thousand years before smartphones existed.

Marcus Aurelius wrote down exactly how. It still works, whether the thing that ambushed you was a headline or a habit you can’t break.

A Messenger Rode in with the Empire Dying

A plague hit Rome in 166 AD, brought home by soldiers returning from the east. At its peak, the historian Cassius Dio reported 2,000 deaths a day in the city alone.

Marcus Aurelius spent the next fourteen years on the Danube frontier fighting the Marcomannic

Wars while that same plague tore through his own army and likely killed his co-emperor, Lucius Verus.

Couriers rode in daily, each one on a fresh horse handed off at the last relay station: sealed tablets, casualty counts, unrest reports from provinces he’d never see in person.

He read every one of them the way you read depressing headlines on your phone. Bad news pouring in faster than he could process it. No button to close the app, though.

Most of us haven’t dealt with empire-level problems, but a run of bad headlines can hit you in 30 seconds on your smartphone, each one demanding a reaction before you’d finished forming one about the last.

You’re irritable at breakfast with your kids and don’t fully know why.

The Emperor Wrote the Fix in Meditations

Somewhere in those dark years, Marcus started writing private notes to himself on papyrus scrolls, never meant for anyone else to read.

Those notes became Meditations, one of the most famous Stoic texts ever written, and survived only by chance.

In one entry, he applies a lesson Epictetus had spent a career teaching him:

Every report arrives twice, once as fact, and once as the verdict you attach to it.

Epictetus called the raw report an impression, phantasia: what you read and your brain sees before you’ve done anything with it.

He called the reaction assent, sunkatathesis: the verdict you give the report.

A courier didn’t hand Marcus a crisis. He gave him a fact. The crisis existed only once Marcus decided what the fact meant. That part, Epictetus insisted, was the only part that had ever been his to control.

You get a vote in the half-second between reading the story on your Android and reacting to it.

Most people never realize they have one.

Two Stoic Tools From Marcus's Notebook

Rome had a version of the negative news feed: a board in the Forum called the Acta Diurna, posted daily since 59 BC with trial verdicts, military reports, births, deaths, and scandal for anyone to read.

Marcus’s own dispatches, plague counts and battlefield losses, likely ended up posted on it. He was managing the news and dealing with it on the battlefield in real time.

The emperor left us two Stoic tools that worked then and now on the negative newsfeed:

Name it before you judge it.

When you read a headline like “Nolan Alters Odyssey Ending, Draws Backlash Over Maids’ Fate,” say the bare fact to yourself first. “Nolan changed an ending.” Not “he’s ruining Homer” or “nobody respects the source material anymore.”

Hold the fact alone in your mind for one breath before the reaction Marcus did this in ink. You can do it in the time it takes to unlock your phone.

Expect one hard thing before you open the app.

Ten seconds, before you scroll: name one difficult thing you already assume you’ll see. Maybe a politician you hate announces a program you think is bad for the country.

The Stoics called this rehearsal premeditatio malorum. It turns the feed from an ambush into a cost you already agreed to pay. Nothing that follows gets to surprise you into a worse mood than you came with.

Marcus was managing plague and army deaths. You’re reacting to headlines. Scale doesn’t matter, though. The mechanism is identical: a bad report arrives, then a separate step decides what it means.

Epictetus pointed out that the second step is the only one anyone ever controls, whether the report says an army lost 1,000 men, or a stranger on your phone said something insulting.

A Horseback Messenger Versus Social Media Algorithms

Marcus had it easier in one way. His bad news arrived on horseback at 10 mph, a few times a week, chosen by men who had to physically ride it to him.

Your bad news arrives on a feed built and tested by people whose job is measuring exactly what makes you react, click, and keep scrolling, then rebuilding the feed around whatever worked best.

In 1968, a researcher named George Gerbner found that heavy TV viewers believed the world was more dangerous than it actually was. He called it mean world syndrome. The smartphone news feed runs the same technique faster.

I learned this last January. I decided to cut political news out of my phone and start a history newsletter instead.

Three days in, I noticed something fascinating: my creativity exploded.

Ideas came for articles, and new chapters showed up for the novel I hadn’t touched in two years.

I’d spent years forming negative opinions almost instantly about events I couldn’t control. The moment I stopped reacting, that same mental energy found better things to do. I’d discovered, without knowing it, what the emperor had figured out 2,000 years earlier.

I think about that billboard often. Some days I enjoy reading bad news again. Part of me relishes the jolt when something’s finally as bad as I suspected, the small rush of being right about how bad things are.

Marcus’s Stoic tool doesn’t erase that feeling, and Epictetus never promised it would. What it gives me is an awareness that I have a choice in how I react to negative news.

Use AI to Fix Bad Headlines Fast

I spend real time on headlines and subheads for every history essay, but sometimes the one I pick still bombs. Usually, I know within an hour of posting: if clicks and read-through are running well below average, there’s a good chance the headline is the problem, not the essay.

When that happens, I ask Claude to generate several headline options based on the finished essay, not the other way around. If I swap one in, I wait about ten minutes, then check Substack’s stats again. More often than not, the clicks and read-through percentage jump.

AI can’t predict which headline will actually work. But it’s useful for generating options fast enough to test one on the fly instead of sticking with a headline that isn’t working.

I liked Gladiator when it debuted in May 2000. After watching it again Saturday afternoon last month, I changed my mind.

It’s Citizen Kane compared to Hollywood 2026.

Today’s Hollywood either doesn’t know how to make a hero’s epic anymore or doesn’t want to. The evidence? Gladiator II and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Twenty-five years apart, Hollywood makes the same error.

Homer never made Odysseus regret it. In the actual Odyssey, the same man who tricks his way into Troy spends the rest of the poem bragging about it. He doesn't apologize for the horse.

He turns it into the reason gods and mortals both respect him. That’s kleos: the glory a hero earned by being unmistakably good at the thing he did, not by feeling bad about it afterward.

Nolan’s Odysseus, by early accounts, treats that same device as a wound to confess. Twenty-eight centuries of the real Odyssey working one way, and 2026 wants it to run backward.

We see modern culture’s belief system at work in Hollywood, but it didn’t start with Christopher Nolan.

Gladiator II: Double the Money and Half the Heart

Russell Crowe blasted Gladiator II when it hit theaters. He said the sequel kept the action and the scale of Gladiator but dumped the values holding the whole thing together. Audiences noticed.

I didn’t watch Gladiator II. I knew Hollywood couldn’t produce a competent hero’s epic to save its life. I wasn’t the only one who thought so.

But, you say, Gladiator II earned $460 million worldwide, almost matching the original’s $465 million!

Right, but two problems.

Gladiator cost just $103 million. Gladiator II burned $250 million to make the same money, more than double the cost for the same ROI.

And adjusted for inflation, the original’s gross is almost $830 million in today’s dollars. Twenty years of goodwill and a much bigger budget still couldn’t make Gladiator II a winner.

Gladiator had other things going for it too. Ridley Scott's direction, Russell Crowe at his peak, a genre nobody had touched in decades. The sequel kept Scott and inherited a devoted fan base built over twenty years.

It just didn’t have Crowe, and it didn’t need to. What it needed was an ending that delivered the same emotional payoff.

Hollywood often assumes audiences come back for bigger battles and better effects. More often, they come back to feel what the first story made them feel. Gladiator understood that.

Maximus loses it all, earns his revenge, and dies at peace. His journey reaches its logical end. The sequel, judging by the reaction from fans and critics alike, never found an ending with the same punch.

You can replace an actor. You can spend twice as much on spectacle. But if the emotional resolution evaporates, so does the reason people cared in the first place.

Then Hollywood Struck Again, to an Ancient Greek Hero

Classicists and critics who have seen The Odyssey describe an ending where Odysseus goes into exile, weighed down by guilt. This is a punishment Homer’s own Odysseus never faced.

Homer’s own audience wouldn’t know what the hell is going on.

Even Emily Wilson, the classicist whose translation Nolan has cited as an influence, has mixed feelings.

She's glad the film brought new attention to Homer. But she's said it misses essential themes. Wilson claims it trades the Homeric ideal of heroic glory for a modern psychological lens instead.

A different studio, different century of source material, and the same faulty fix: give the hero guilt he never earned, then call it depth.

Note to Hollywood: Original Gladiator Is Streaming on Hulu

Maximus kills. Maximus wins. Maximus dies satisfied, having settled every score.

The audience cheered and threw fistfuls of money at everyone involved.

No guilt spiral required about the piles of bodies.

The film snagged five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor, and a quarter century later it still boasts an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes with 250,000 ratings. People don’t just remember Gladiator fondly. They still watch it and still love it, right now, on Hulu.

Hollywood keeps acting like it doesn’t know whether audiences will accept a clean-winning hero. The answer’s been streaming for over 10 years.

Ask yourself: did you ask for the guilt-ridden version of anything, or did it just start arriving that way from Hollywood?

Guilt: Hollywood’s Go-To for Depth

In the mid-2000s, prestige television and Nolan’s own Batman films trained a generation of writers and executives that moral complexity equals seriousness.

The Sopranos and Breaking Bad turned slow moral corrosion into the smartest thing on TV, and Nolan’s Batman brought the conflicted hero to the big screen.

By the 2010s, giving a hero guilt had become the default for anyone who wanted their film to be considered ‘art.’

Someone tell Marvel.

The Avengers made $1.5 billion worldwide in 2012, the same year The Dark Knight Rises ended Nolan’s brooding, guilt-soaked Batman trilogy. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor: none of them needed therapy to be worth rooting for.

By the end of the 2010s, the MCU had crossed $10 billion. Nolan’s own Batman trilogy, running the same years and drawing raves for its complexity, never touched that number. Two genres, one of them running through Nolan’s own decade, made different nine-figure bets.

The clean-hero bet won audiences’ hearts.

Kleos Built Odysseus. Guilt Built Walter White.

The real filmmaking error is borrowing one genre’s engine to run a different genre’s story. Antihero psychology exists to tell a story about a man’s slow moral collapse.

A Homeric epic runs on kleos, on glory, on proving yourself against gods and fate. These are not the same operating system, and audiences have always known the difference, even when Hollywood forgets it.

The Odyssey wasn't written once and locked in place in 800 BC. It was performed and reshaped by generations of bards, at festivals, in front of live audiences, for centuries before anyone wrote it down.

The Trojan Horse itself shows up on pottery from the 7th century BC, proof that this story was already old before Homer's version became the one that stuck.

What survived that process is what ancient audiences kept choosing to hear again.

Kleos and glory won out, generation after generation, because that’s what the ancient Greeks wanted from their heroes.

Running the Breaking Bad routine on a story that ancient audiences already field-tested for hundreds of years is a strange choice.

You rewatch endings that made you feel something, not endings where the hero worked through his guilt.

Gladiator has stood the test of time. Will The Odyssey?

Hollywood forgot what epic heroes are for. The answer has been on Hulu for years.

I’m not worried about the story. Twenty-five years hasn’t dulled it. I'm more concerned about the studio executives greenlighting these scripts.

Use AI to Boost Your Substack Read-Through Rate by 55%

Many argue about AI. It’s the end of the world. It’s the greatest thing since the wheel.

The truth, as usual, is in the middle.

One area AI excels: analyzing data, or writing, and finding patterns humans take far longer to spot.

In June, I noticed my Substack read-through rate was mediocre. Sure, 434 people viewed the article, but only 42% finished it.

Why?

The same week, I was reading one of the best history writers on Substack. His writing is sophisticated. It’s rich, but still easy to read. I always finish his essays.

I notice great writing that pulls me along. I don’t always know why.

Enter Claude.

I fed Claude ten of this writer’s essays and asked why they were so good. In seconds, it broke down why the essays work, and exactly what was making mine harder to finish.

Here’s what it found, and these are now rules I write by:

• Short, clear headlines, usually under eight words.

• Brief asides every few hundred words that pull the reader back into the essay.

• Introductions under 175 words that state the essay’s actual argument, not just its topic.

For example, my first essay this week, “We Gave Odysseus a Guilt He Never Earned,” is a word longer than I usually prefer these days. But it worked. Read-through rate: 97-98 percent.

Almost everyone who opens that essay finishes it.

I also insert checkpoints with the reader two or three times per piece. Short lines like “maybe you’ve had a similar feeling,” dropped in right after I state a fact, pull the reader back into the essay before they drift.

Then I make certain the introduction ends with a clear statement about what’s next.

From my essay this week:

“Botch the Odyssey’s ending, and you’re not getting hired for the next festival. Replacing it with something gentler tells those audiences they misunderstood the story written for them. Here’s why anything less would have felt like a cheat.”

Your assignment: feed Claude ten essays from a Substack writer you admire. Ask what makes the writing work, then reverse-engineer it into your own.

Open your newsfeed. Count the headlines saying the world is ending.

I’ll wait.

Doom sells clicks. Scroll long enough, and you might believe you’re living through history’s worst chapter.

You aren’t.

Things have been much worse, and people survived anyway.

A 2023 review of more than 1,000 adults found that doomscrolling was associated with poorer mental well-being and lower life satisfaction. Even unrelated worries feel worse after consuming a steady diet of bad news.

Two years later, the freewheeling Roaring Twenties began.

Three times a week, I find the historical version of today’s anxiety and show how people lived through something similar centuries ago. The past was often brutal. Human beings made it, anyway.

I cracked The Odyssey last month for the first time since Ronald Reagan was in the White House.

What I remembered most vividly: the ending. Odysseus walks into his house and slaughters the suitors where they stand.

Forgot how far Homer goes. Athena stands beside Odysseus while he does it.

The poem doesn’t flinch, and neither did the ancient Greek audience it was written for.

Unlikely that a 2026 Hollywood adaptation would leave the abattoir ending untouched. Modern American storytelling doesn’t do endings that refuse remorse.

That’s what director Christopher Nolan went with. Suitors surrender rather than die. The household slaves Homer executes are spared. Odysseus is exiled, not restored to his throne.

These are problematic updates.

They rewrite the moral of one of the foundational texts of Western culture.

Homer’s ending was the verdict generations of Greek audiences had already agreed this story should have. The Odyssey existed as oral performance for centuries before it was fixed in writing around the 8th century BC.

It was sung at festivals and reworked by bard after bard. It got tested against a live crowd every single time.

Bomb the Odyssey’s ending, and you’re not getting hired for the next festival.

Replacing it with something gentler tells those audiences they misunderstood the story written for them.

Here’s why anything less would have felt like a cheat.

Homer’s Audience Didn’t Want Mercy. They Wanted Justice Paid in Full.

The Ithaca suitors weren’t dinner guests overstaying their welcome by an hour. For years, they occupied Odysseus’s hall, ate through his livestock, and pressured his wife to remarry while his son watched, powerless, in his own home.

To a Greek audience, that was a frontal assault on xenia, the sacred law of host and guest that held their entire social world together.

So when Odysseus finally kills them, the poem doesn’t treat it as a tragedy or a line he crosses. Athena stands beside him doing it. The gods sanction it.

They were meant to feel a debt finally get paid, the way a story that had spent twenty-four books building toward this is supposed to end.

Homer signals it the instant Odysseus casts off his disguise:

Odysseus announces that judgment day has arrived on schedule. There's no crisis in it at all.

Nolan Swaps Justice for a 2026 Guilty Conscience

Nolan’s film scuttles the ending.

Suitors surrender rather than die. The slave women Homer executes are spared. Odysseus is haunted less by the war than by guilt over the Trojan Horse itself, and instead of reclaiming his throne, he’s exiled from it, sailing away while his son is crowned in his place.

Every change points in the same direction: consequence as something to apologize for, not something earned.

We soften it because our instincts aren’t the Greeks’. Collective punishment feels unfair now, so sparing the slave women reads as a correction, not loss. We’ve grown suspicious of clean victories, trained by decades of stories where triumph without guilt feels shallow.

Our culture trusts a man who gives something up. It's suspicious of a man who gets it all back.

Exile feels earned to us. Handing a man his throne back, untouched, feels like he got away with something.

Homer’s audience only asked whether the outcome was fair. Our culture asks if the process was defensible.

You’ve probably watched this happen. A dress code that held an office together for twenty years gets called outdated, right after the person who never had to run the place shows up and says so.

Homer’s Odysseus never agonizes over the Horse, because his culture never asked him to. Cunning was the virtue that won the war.

When he confronts the suitors, he doesn’t search for absolution. He tells them plainly there’s nowhere left to run. Grafting our 2026 discomfort with unambiguous justice onto a Bronze Age hero erases him and puts our face on the mask.

Homer’s Odysseus Would Be Baffled by His Own Guilt

There’s a word for what the Odyssey promises: nostos, homecoming. It’s the root of our word nostalgia, and it’s the entire architecture of the poem. It means every choice across ten years and twenty-four books points at one outcome: get home, stay there, restored.

Nolan’s ending has him sail away again, permanently. Twenty-four books of buildup, and the story never delivers the one thing it exists to deliver.

Metis was cleverness, trickery in the service of victory. The Greeks celebrated it without complication.

Burdening a Bronze Age hero with our discomfort about victory itself makes him a stranger, one that Homer wouldn’t recognize.

The Greeks had a complete moral world, with its own working logic for guilt and justice. Mistaking that for a rough draft of ours is how you lose what made it worth telling.

The Poem Was Already Finished. Then It Kept Going.

Homer doesn’t stop at the bodies on the floor. Word gets to the suitors’ families. They pick up arms and march on the house, and Ithaca stands on the edge of a blood feud that could have consumed a generation.

Zeus needs to throw a thunderbolt, and Athena physically forces a truce to end it. University of Iowa classics scholar Celsiana Warwick argues a tidy reunion would have felt unsatisfying to an ancient audience; they needed the feud itself resolved before the story could truly end.

The same poem that delivers the harshest justice in ancient literature also spends a hundred lines ensuring the killing doesn’t spiral into a feud.

Homer’s audience didn’t need the slaughter softened to get their reconciliation. They trusted the story to earn both.

We don’t owe an old story an apology for what it once believed. The more interesting move is trusting people three thousand years dead to have known exactly what they were doing.

How to Make AI Sound Like a Person

I use Claude to do a very rough initial draft based on my essay outline. Even with instructions about my writing voice, the draft is filled with AI-sounding words. Land. Sit with. Quiet.

It also uses mirrored sentence structures, the ‘it’s not X, it’s Y’ rule, rule-of-three lists, and hedgy phrases like ‘reports suggest.’

Claude also drafted a line implying we are more enlightened than the Greeks, which I don’t believe, and which isn’t what my essay argues.

I spent a couple of hours editing the draft to sound like me, including the line about cracking the Odyssey again for the first time since Reagan was in office. That detail doesn’t come from a machine.

If you want your writing to sound real, drop real details in every few paragraphs that AI couldn’t come up with. AI doesn’t know the details of real life because it isn’t real. The more specific you make your writing, the less machine-made it sounds.

My dad asked me to do a job I didn’t want when my mom died.

I walked into the funeral home and told the clerk, “I’m here for my mom’s remains.”

She gaped at me in horror. “You mean the CREMAINS?” she exclaimed.

“Oh. Yeah,” I said. “That.”

Grief requires a new vocabulary.

I drove home with the box of Mom’s cremains on the passenger seat.

It was small.

Something hit me as I left, something other than grief -

My mom lost her mother and father. My dad lost his decades ago.

Everyone in my line older than me had felt this pain.

I didn’t feel so alone.

I felt the burden of grief lift. Slightly.

Didn’t know it, but I had discovered philosophic tools built by men who’d buried people they loved two thousand years before I did.

I didn’t know Seneca’s name. I didn’t know Epictetus’s name.

I just recognize the pattern now.
