You’re not looking at ruins.
You’re looking at what’s left of paint.
But one color is almost missing.
Most people never notice it.
Once you do—you can’t unsee it.
If you like details most people walk past, follow along. I write these a few times a week.
Not because Romans didn’t like it—
but because it was expensive to make.
So most walls were red.
Blue only shows up in small details…
or in the homes of the wealthy.
Most people walk past this.
I don’t.
That’s the difference.
The blue around it is what mattered.
Walk through Pompeii and you’ll see it again and again—
walls still carrying that deep red tone.
Blue is different.
To make it, pigments had to be processed at high heat—
in controlled conditions.
More steps.
More cost.
So it was used carefully.
A border.
A figure.
A detail meant to stand out.
