This is the kind of history people need more of. The Declaration wasn’t born in comfort. It came out of heat, fear, edits, illness, disagreement and men who knew exactly what their signatures could cost.

The future couldn't have been murkier than at this time 250 years ago. But they risked it.

The sacrifices many of the Founders and other influential Patriot figures at the time made were great.

Having to call artillery on your own home, or get arrested and beaten and your family and possessions and status taken from you... because you decided to stand with your country and people.

Many didn't have to participate. They did anyway, regardless of the risks.

Would this have been a good place to include those passages that were taken out of Jefferson's preferred version?

Probably so Mark. I didn't think about that. I can do a little research in the next day or two and re-edit this. I'll see what I can find. Good idea.

I think what I'm going to do is save that for another article. Maybe I'll do that next week because there are ample resources out there on that. Thanks for the idea. That's a good one.
