Long ago, I worked for a convenience store chain based in Texas. I remember talking with the VP about what the stores really needed — clean bathrooms. He looked at me like I was nuts. People didn’t care about that.

Five years later, Buckee’s opened their first store in Luling Tx, not too far from one of our stores.

I’ll let you fill in the rest of that story.

Not a forwarding thinking VP! He must not have taken many 1500 mile road trips with his wife!

I seek out Buc-ee’s mostly for the toilets and fast service. Go to Love’s at 2 am in Arkansas, it’s some super slow cashier and a bathroom that looks like a bomb hit it.

It was a huge game changer, for sure. I remember the Stuckey stores when I was young and they did the same as Buckee’s. People wanted to stop there. That VP was focused on short term profits and bonuses not building for growing the market.

When I was a kid in Ohio, my dad used to play a game with me when we went to a restaurant - Rate The Bathroom. From 1-10. I think there were a lot of low ratings!

Hah! We did the same! Not many did well down in Texas either.

Buc-ee’s really is America in one stop....enormous, efficient, slightly absurd, and somehow impossible not to admire.

My mom, RIP, said this the first time she walked into Buc-ee's in New Braunfels TX: "My God!"
